Have you tried another USB device in the PC first, to see if it is the device itself?

If you have, then your next step is likely to look in Disk Utility (Mac) or Disk Management(?) (Windows). See if it appears in there when it's plugged in.

If it appears under Disk Utility/Management, it may be that the drive inside is faulty, or perhaps has become corrupt. If it's become corrupt, you may be able to repair it within the utility.

Failing that, no idea.

Do you have any USB ports on the rear that you could try?

This first, always try the simple things first. Then try another cable.

Next turn off (not re-boot) the pc, leave it a minute and while waiting for the pc to load up, turn off the mp3 player and back on again before plugging it back in again.

Only after that start messing about with settings on either device.

Seriously, turn it off and turn it on again.

Invariably, always the first thing to try before 'fixing' something that ain't broke.

Did you eject the device properly before you unplugged it? Try plugging another USB device in and see if that is recognised, a USB stick or similar. That will tell you if the ports are good.

Can you reinstall the driver for your device?

Reset the mp3 player with a pin bearing in mind data may get wiped. I had the same with a sony mp3 once and that cured!

Make sure it works on another PC so your not wasting time if you can.

Plug in and go in to device manager and find the device - it will be there may be unknown device. Uninstall the device. Unplug. Reboot. Plug it in.

Tada.

You can delete everything under the USB tab in device manager, restart the computer and it will re-detect and install everything.

Have you got any other usb devices plugged in? If so unplug ALL of them, reboot and try the mp3 again.

Try plugging it into a different computer? Or a mac if it still isn't recognized!

This. It sounds like the device itself (or the USB cable for it) are faulty.

It's obviously the device itself. Flash memory still isn't massively reliable.

Did you remember to use the safely remove usb function, when you removed the mp3 player in the past?

If you write stuff to a device the system may not have completed everything until you metaphorically kick it up the rear by the safely remove usb function.

A few months ago a colleague plugged and unplugged his iPod into my PC without using the safely remove usb function and screwed up the usb drivers on the system.

I believe Sunbeam Alpine is right here. Sometimes a USB device will leave the 'connection' open when it is removed. You will find it works in other machines and that other USB devices work in your machine.
You will need to remove all USB devices in Device Manager and restart - had to do this a few times at work is solves it everytime.
