I am due to get a watch as a gift from work, after selflessly devoting 20 years of my life to my employers. The max price is £3850 and I have to order it from http://www.jamieson-carry.com

I know nothing about watches, and my regular chronometer is a $40 Casio, so which watch would be the best investment for me? I don't actually plan to sell it, but I'd like something fairly basic that looks like it cost nearly 4 grand and will still be worth somewhere near 4 grand in ten years time. I'm looking at this one: Gents 41mm Carrera Automatic Chronograph Calibre 1887, prices at £3695

I wanted a gold Rolex, but it looks like you can't get them in that price range. frown Any advice welcome.

To be honest very few watches (except steel sports Rolex) hold their value like that, I certainly wouldn't expect that Tag to.

Firstly I would say buy the one that you like, after all you are the one who will be wearing it.

Having said that my choice from that site would be one of the Zenith Captain range - a simple, classic design, fom a true manufacture, one of the top Swiss makers. It will still look good in 40 years let alone 10.

Seiko Spring drive, if you can buy used Steel Rolex

I just looked on the website, if it has to be from them and new, I would say Zenith

Quite a nice looking watch, for £3600

though I prefer this one, at £3200, in appearance:

Got to agree with this. Ask if you can pay the extra yourself and get one of these.

If the watch isn't something that you'll wear every day then I'd go for someting like this:

The Carrera is £3300 but the Mont Blanc comes in at £2800 which would leave enough for a Tag or Longiness stainless daily wearer (if you can split your purchase).

That looks very similar to the Seamaster lower down, at £3600. I did look at it, but it looked a bit orangy round the edges, may not look quite like it in real life though.

If you'd like a Rolex, how about a steel Datejust at £4200?

Other dials are available...

I own this watch, (though the bezel is black on mine) and it is stunning. My all time favorite. The Orange numerals really zing out of the face and lift the whole thing.

Nothing to add other than my BIL works for Schlumberger and has just done his 20years and is also looking for a watch - will direct to this thread as he is clueless. Love the look of that first Omega.

I would certainly get an Omega Planet Ocean.

I'm sure the one at £100 they would knock down for you if you ask nicely! wink

It's £3850 AW, and Jamieson & Carry are a Rolex stockist. I'm sure King H would be allowed to 'top up' to buy a more expensive piece.... smile

How about a Vintage watch?

You might get something that will hold its value then?

Something from 20 years ago would seem appropriate, but probably doesn't quite count as Vintage yet (ie will probably just be 'old watch' money).

I don't know if you can, but like cars sometimes money is better spent on a used watch at the lower end of what budgets can be for these things. A classic design like a Rolex or an AP means that they are fairly resistant to showing their age as the design is more or less the same.

If your employers allows it, a used watch would give you access to some bigger names like IWC etc.

And there's a Rolex at £3750.

I am fairly sure that Enrest Jones will do you a new steel Rolex Datejust for that price.
