We are building a Porsche 917K replica.
It will have a GRP body and tubular chassis similar to the original.
Engine and transaxle will come from a Boxster.
Maybe if money allows a 911 engine and transaxle.

Here are some pictures of the body.

Should keep me busy in 2013.

interesting project. Bailey Edwards in South Africa build some very decent looking 917 replicas.

Wow, this will be amazing. Is it going to be road legal? Any more details on the kit? Please keep this thread running with all the build details.

Good luck with the build.

Yes it as the same length, and width as the original 917.
Only your feet will be a little further backwards.
Otherwise I can't have it registered for road use.
And a Bailey Edwards would cost me almost 3 times the amount to build compared to what I will be spending.

Great project, will they be commercially available? Got to be air cooled surely?

Could you not stick the mechanicals from that spanked 6 RS inside?

Fantastic project. Must be air cooled. Out if interest I note that is has been painted prior to having the apertures cut out. Or is the colour pre impregnated into the gel coat.

Yes, we used light blue gelcoat on this body.
The first body we made was white, but I like this colour better.
But when it's finished it needs to be painted.

What engine configuration are you going to use. What sort of build price are you expecting. Really looking forward to this taking shape.

I will put in an engine + transaxle + driveshafts from a Boxster.
You can buy these very cheap.
But of course the engine bay is big enough to put in an air cooled 911 engine.

I expect to build it for about ₤ 30 to 35K.
This would even include air conditioning (as the cockpit can be very hot in sunny days).
Using an air cooled 911 engine would probably be a few thousand extra.
Depends on how much the 911 engine and gearbox would cost.
