Cheap decent wine & special offers
Discussion
I always find our Co-ops in Yorks pretty good for wine, in particular they have a Chilean Chardonnay for about £4 which isn't bad at all for the price - much better than Tescos equivalent which is heading towards anti-freeze territory. Just lately they've had a Gallo Merlot on offer, down from £7 odd to £5 odd which is a very easy drinking wine.
I know I'm not on my own as (dependent on time of year) the shelves are regularly empty of these two...
Any good bargains to be had down your way that others may be interested in?

These days we swear by Aldi. Their Toro Loco, is a very very glugable spanish temperanilo, and @ 3.59 a bottle is v hard to beat. TBH the typical supermarket scam of 'pretending' to sell a wine at a higher price for a month and then putting it on offer for around a fiver pisses me off.
Better to trade honestly like Aldi who sell a range of wines at permanently low prices.
Rant over!

I find it bizarre that people actually believe they are getting a bargain. My BiL is forever informing me of his half price bargains from Tesco. IT'S A 5 BOTTLE OF WINE, IT WAS NEVER WORTH 12, IT'S JUST A MARKETING SCAM. Drives me nuts. It's also had a big impact on what I buy, I'm no expert on wine, but now I won't buy a 10-15 bottle of wine from Tesco et al, because it could be a 5 bottle marked-up to only be reduced later. If I want reasonable wine I'll now only buy from a merchant.
We're also loving the Toro Loco BTW, great value.
Certain elements of 'The Wine Selection at Asda' at 2 bottles for £7 are a lot nicer than you'd think.
The Australian and South African reds punch well above their weight, as does the Chilean sauvignon. However be warned - everything else in the range tastes like the cheap wine that it is.
I'm also a great fan of Lidl's £4.49 SA Merlot. The Lidl £7.49 Chablis is also a steal, knocking any Chablis at less than £12 into a cocked hat.

I have recently got into Naked Wines.
Interesting system. You guarantee a spend of £20 a month with them. They then invest their guaranteed revenues in promising young winemakers and give them a chance to make wine for Naked Wines. You then get to buy this wine at a discounted price, using your £20 a month money, and any extra ££s necessary.
It comes with an iPhone app and a website where you can rate the wines. The clever bit is as you rate the wines they offer you wines that are similar. After a while the wine you are being recommended should match your tastes exactly. I've been going for about a year and every case I buy is a total winner by now.
Average bottle price on the cases I buy is £8. Bargain.
Worth a go - especially if you get an introductory voucher off Amazon...

^^^^ I've had some v good wines from Naked Wines, but also a few which were not so good...... to be fair more have been on the positive side.
I forget I have the account and slowly contribute £20/month until I've got enough to buy a case..... or until someone reminds I've got this account
... I'm off wine shopping

Toro Loco
This is a thread for cheap but decent, not just cheap!
Interested to hear what other Temperanilo's you think compare. I've tried a ton of them lately and Toro Loco is definitely at the better end of the spectrum in my opinion, certainly the best under a tenner that I've come across so far.

Naked wines are pretty good. Have had a few misses of late, but largely positive.

It was either terrible or just not my taste, it's a fine line I know, but i'm tempted to label it as undrinkable - not against other Tempranillos, just wine in general. I'm shocked to hear you say there are worse out there!I was going to save some to sprinkle on my chips or use for cooking, but the equally sourfaced (after sampling of course) OH said that Aldi will refund if you don't like so i'll try that.
I picked up a Barossa Shiraz for about £5 which was bearable.
For quaffing plonk, it's hard to beat Majestic. They do a very good Touraine Sauvignon from domain Prevot for about £8 a bottle which is our house white and some very good reds for about the same price - currently working through a couple of cases of Argentinian Malbec that drink very well

Yes and no. For example, Tesco will sometimes have Kumala Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz at £5 a bottle, but more often than not I see it at £10+. I know I can get it for £5.50ish if I buy in bulk online etc, but in a supermarket £5 is not its regular price.Does this make it a £5 bottle or a £10 bottle?
I like the Aldi Torro Loco too, (it does benefit from being opened & allowed to breathe) first tried it at mum & dads after they read about it on
