Royal purple ears gearboxes!
Discussion
I've been looking for gear oil for my in laws m5 & have come across a number of concerns relating in the very high sulphur content of rp (hence its horrid smell) compared with other oils. Sulpher eats through metal over a period of time especially bronze which is used in gearboxes.
The claim of the high sulphur content has been confirmed by the USA governing body although anyone who has smelt it can confirm it

Our gearboxes are quite capable of eating themselves anyway.
I never believe American authors, especially when it's posted on the internet.
I think I'll carry on risking it
While I tend to take anything American with a pinch of salt it is a fact that rp uses over 4 times the amount of sulphur than other oils & this can be very bad for gearboxes.I never believe American authors, especially when it's posted on the internet.

As Richie said Neil, it may well be right but the boxes eat themselves before the oil get anywhere near..

The RP rear diff oil smells bad too. I changed it recently because it didn't seem to work too well in my car. I replaced it with some Comma LSD oil. I haven't disposed of the RP stuff yet, it came out looking blue and is still in a drip tray, the whole garage stinks of it!
Do Monkfish still recommend it?

Which one did you use, and how did it work? Is the car OK with it? Do Monkfish still recommend it?

Here is the problem I had when the diff had Royal Purple + slip modifier in it:http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...
I replaced it with some off the shelf Comma LSD oil. I can't remember the spec but I still have the bottles, I'll post the spec later. Since the oil has been changed the LSD operation is much smoother. The clunking and excessive locking up has gone. The rear wheels seem to gripping ok but I haven't really tried it in anger yet. With the RP stuff in it, the car had become almost undriveable.

You sure it was the RP?. If it had modifier as well, then it was probably the Redline stuff we used to use before the RP became available with the right blend.

I thought it was RP that went in it, may be it was Redline? May be the diff modifier you sent me wasn't compatible with whatever was in it. All I know is, the old oil came out looking completely blue in colour, and stinks like hell!GSE said:

Blue is the redline stuff. (RP is actually a clear purple) Works well to begin with, but does seem to change over time. Which you have confirmed. Found the RP to be more stable in the longterm.
