monaro vxr brakes
Discussion
ive changed the front pads in my vxr for pf pads done 400 miles in it can anyone tell me how long they take to bed in .i am going to swap the rears this week .the brakes appear very poor even for a heavy car (is this normal).are there any other calipers that will bolt on with 4 or 6 pots as i,m not happy with the sliding calper set up.i have other cars with modded calipers from other cars .
If you think the VXR ones are bad the stock CV8 brakes would blow your mind
CV8 owners with standard brakes would view your calipers as an upgrade
Looks like you'll be needing the AP racing big brake kit. Give the Fish a call but make sure you're sitting down when they tell you the price

I did 400 mile with new pads and they were still rubbish . 400bhp + needs brakes and the APs are the best and safest mod you can invest in .As Emma says they are 2k but very simple to fit ,running in must be done properly .

Guess I must drive mine pretty hard as I don't think the AP's are outstanding
. I've just put new discs and Pagid RS29 pads on the front and they seem better. I'm off the Germany next week so I'll give you my unqualified opinion when I get back

Well there is the Wortec 12 pots 410mm calipers but you need 20" rims. Doubt you'll get better unless you go carbon ceramics but you could probably afford to given the price of the Wortecs
i cant believe they put such crap brakes on such a heavy car .i may have to bite the bullet and buy they aps but got a few other ideas first.all these kits such as ap you are paying for the time that the kit has taken to work out .i dont think the calipers will have been made for the monaro only it looks like a standard kit with different spacers ect .so all we need are the part numbers and a pile of washers .

Nice, what's the cost comparison compared to the genuine kit?
the monkfish kit is not that far over the top when you consifer the backup and aftersales they will provide you with .i have found brembos which will do the job but it will take time to get costings .do monkfish do any loyalties or discounts for bulk orders ie pedders suspension.brake kit .if anyone knows you would lolgaryv8tiger said:

Hi Guys
i have had my VXR about a month now. When i got it the brakes were shocking. It was like clamping glass with blocks of wood and after one stop they hardly worked at all.
I made my own big brake conversion on my last car which was an E46 M3. I am planning on doing the same on my VXR.
I started looking into but i had a Nurburgring trip planned for last weekend so didnt have time to build something and fit it so i invested in a set of (IMO) very good pads. I went for a set of Hawk HT10's. I had HSV discs on the car which are grooved and in not too bad condition so i shot blasted the discs to get the glaze of them (the pads felt as smooth as glass, couldnt see what make they were). I bedded the new ones in on the the way there and the first couple of laps. It took longer than normal as the discs wernt new.
The car already had braided lines so i bled the fluid and put some good stuff in and i was plesently suprised with how good the brakes are on the stock size disc.
Before trying to build your own kit, have a look at the thread i put together for the M3 conversion. The brakes, even with just EBC yellows were as good as my mates M3 with the AP kit which is the same size as the VXR kit.

If you try and put a pair of 4 pot brembos from the front of an Alfa or peugeot, you will be very dissapointed, they are very small and would be ok for the rear of the VXR but way to small for the front. The ebc website gives you measurements for Pads and you will see that the VXR front pads are huge! bigger than the AP's. For this reason when i replace all the discs for larger ones i will use the stock calipers as they feel really nice now, could just do with bigger discs to deal with the heat a little better, they were smoking when i pulled up at the ring car park! but still worked very well.
I am still researching which discs to use, the front is easy and should be about £90 per pair (same size as AP's), the rears are proving a little more complicated due to the handbrake, once i have sussed it out i will do a conversion thread.

thanks for the reply i have done big brake mods myself as you say it is pretty easy just takes time and research.i am only just starting to look into it .just fitted pf pads but not happy .do you think the hawk pads are worth a try ?i have had my VXR about a month now. Incorrect. The AP kit for manaro uses specific calipers and discs, except the actual front disc minus bell. The kit was supplied to HSV as an option on australian sold HSV variants.
Compared to other AP kits, these are excellent value.
