What goes through recruiters heads?

I've been in the current job for over a year and am not looking for anything else. Recently a recruiter messaged me on linkedin saying he had been asked to contact me by a company local to me with regard to a job.
A quick google puts him far far away in the country from me - so its the usual lying recruiter nonsense and I ignore it. Normal enough lying recruiter nonsense so far, right?
A day after that I get a bunch of missed calls on my mobile (withheld numbers of course), then I get a call from reception at work saying x is on the line returning a call from you (evidently he googled my current workplace). Of course, I never called him. He's made up a company name he is supposedly calling from to avoid being picked up as a recruiter by reception, but as I recognise the name I ask them to get rid of him.
Since then he's called three times with various psuedonyms trying to get through, and been asked not to call each time.
Next time I'll have to try hearing him out and then saying no, but it boggles the mind. Even if I were looking, why on earth would I use someone who has done nothing but lie!

The recruiter feels the end justifies the means. After all in their mind, they have the perfect job for you and all they need is two minutes to tell you about it and KERCHING !

Why the reluctance to talk to them?
You may not be looking and may be very happy with what you have but that doesn't mean to say what they have isn't even better. They're clearly keen to speak with you so I'd speak to them. What's there to loose other than 10 mins of your time - more of which you've spent telling us here about it! :-)

I work in recruitment. I live in Bristol. The closest assignment I'm working on at the moment is in Aberdeen, and most are in the Middle East or the US/Canada.
None of my clients or candidates are based anywhere closer than a short haul flight away.
Also, we use pseudonyms when calling into companies so that your colleagues don't know you took a call from a recruiter. Usually it's only to get a mobile number and a better time to call back, unless you happen to be a senior level person with your own private office.

I make such calls on a daily basis and maybe one in a hundred are badly received, if that. The point is, nobody at the company knows who was calling except for the intended target of the call. Sometimes, you call to find out names and job titles and then call back another day to get put through to them.
This is how real recruiting was always done, prior to the internet making it easy for legions of "recruiters" to pull hordes of largely mediocre candidates from monster.com. It's still the most effective (if time consuming) way. How else would you propose to reliably and quickly get hold of someone who isn't actively looking for a job and for whom you have no other contact details?
Not to say that this other guy doesn't lack a bit (a lot) of tact...

I've had this happen to me once, I found it very surprising and was thoroughly unimpressed about it. In fact I was unimpressed enough to rant about it on PH

My position hasn't and I doubt will ever change, though. On my CV I put clear means of contacting me. When I have time I'll get back to the recruiter. I will refuse to deal with a recruiter who does this out of principle. It's unprofessional and rude.
Be nice. You never know when the guy will come in use. During the construction boom recruiters pestered the life out of me (senior surveyor/construction manager) to upsticks and take to pastures new/greener. I always was polite and had a quick chat to briefly pick at their brains as to what was going on elsewhere in the industry whilst letting them have a pick at mine.
With the construction industry on it's arse currently and me having to get by on short term contracts the odd freelancing gig I wish to hell one of them would give me a cold call now.

This, I always reply, and if the role isn't for me I will pass the details onto friends that it might suit. I keep getting loads texts from a company who have apparently been trying to contact me about my CV which they have had copy of.
Odd that I have no missed calls or voice messages .
In the end a guy phoned me to tell me that "names guy" is desperate to talk with me.
I have no clue who the guy he named is but he said it like I should know him and be suitably impressed.
It turns out that they want me to pay them to rewrite my CV.

ks, Recruiters are here to stay infatc I'd guess there will be many more as companies realise they don't need a massive HR depsrtment, they only need enough to handle their current employees, the recruiter will do inital CV sifts, potentially inital interviews and only pass on a few good candiates who can be interviewed by their prospective manager and a HR representative.

We both did the same role, this 'job' was also supposedly with the company I was working for, who definitely weren't recruiting.
Having recognised my colleagues CV I forwarded it to him and he went mental at HR (outsourced) who had obviously shared it around and the recruitment mong. The following day I got this email:

I had my CV as searchable for a while on the usual recruitment sites and got at least 1 call a day from various recruiters. I didn't usually answer as I was either busy or got fecked off with talking to them so regularly.
I mainly did it to check what I was worth on the open market to make sure I wasn't pigeon holed in my current job which proved successful, but jesus some of them bite into you like a rabid dog. I almost felt stalked - if they can't get me on the phone, voicemails and texts they make contact with me through LinkedIn.
From this experience I think it's best just to have a couple of recruiters you're in contact with, I can't be dealing with all of these people. Also they all seem to want me to come in for a chat to register - how the hell do you get around 40 odd recruiters and build decent relationships with each.
