I had been thinking that my 450 didn't seem to have a rev limiter fitted or working when I've been able to freely rev (when stationary) up to around 6,500 rpm with just a blip of the throttle, when parking up this morning I squeezed the loud pedal to clear the flues and the rev counter showed 8,000 rpm !!!! and gave a small back fire, no apparent problems with engine though. Any tips, suggestions would be much appreciated. I've had the car since December and it had new head gaskets at TVR Power in January where no other problems were reported. Thanks in advance, Richard

Is the rev counter showing the correct reading?

I've had mine round to 8k on two occasions ... once when a friend was driving and went from 2nd to 3rd and instead went 2nd to 1st and he shat himself, the second was when my accelerator got caught under the drivers side mat (I hadn't enabled the rev limiter on the ECU).

It's an interesting sound and not one I want to hear too regularly! biggrin

I don't understand why you would want to rev it to 6500 when stationery.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't intend to rev out to any particular rpm it's just what the rev counter showed with a blip of the throttle, mind you I am a bit heavy footed ! I believe the rev counter to be reasonably accurate. If I assume that the rev limiter is disabled how do I enable it ? Also, indicated idle speed when cold settles down to 900-950 rpm but when warmed up sits at around 1100 rpm ? as ever any help or advice much appreciated.

Are you on the original 14CUX ECU?

Phil, As far as I know ECU & injectors etc. are standard, although I've fitted new ignition leads & coil from Powerspark. All I've done mechanically is remove pre-cats but am awaiting a decat y piece from Clive. Cheers, Richard

I know it sounds great, but revving the crap out of an unloaded engine wont have a happy ending.

Thanks for your concern and I realise that, I wasn't doing it for fun, it really was just responding to a quick squeeze on the throttle !

I'm not certain I have one either, but then again I don't have think I feel the need to find out LOL

I'll occasionally rev mine past 6500 when REALLY going for it and as yet I've not come up against any limiter but I know the revcounters aren't always accurate across the range.

I have MegaSquirt.

Soft cut set at 6K and full cut at 6,250.

As max power is at approx 5,750 on mine it is pointless to go above 6K.

I dont believe that there is a limiter on the Lucas jobbies as I am sure I used to rev mine to 7K in the heat of the moment on TDs!

Then as far as I'm aware you don't have a limiter ... I never found one on mine when I had the 14CUX on there.

I'm sure mine has a rev limiter somewhere north of 6.5k although was too busy hanging on and staring out the window to check. A definite rev limiter feeling - unless the coil/leads/plugs were just going oh fk!

+1, I think i have felt mine cut in at around 6500rpm when accelerating hard and lost traction but only saw the rev counter on the way down as i backed off.

I was of the impression (I'm new to rv8) that the 14cux works on a fuel cut around 5-6k.

yes Should have, when I run my Wideband on the Lucas with it's controller software my fuel cut at 6.2 K and the TVR tacho had just swept past 6k approx HC 4.0 wink you only hit these revs in the lower gears on the smaller engined cars IMO scratchchin

Thanks for all the replies, tips & advice chaps. Not sure if I'm more educated or more confused !?!?!? As far as the hot idling issue goes I suspect the lambda sensor(s) might be playing up / slightly damaged, so am replacing in any case. With regard to the rev limiter I'll just be a bit more careful for now until I can invest in some protection !
