This is something that is bothering me at the moment. No doubt I'll be told to shut up and stop worrying over the off penny - but I'm one of those people who accounts for every last penny that is paid in or out of my possession.

Recently I've found it's almost impossible to stop the fuel pumps on an exact figure. It used to be very easy and I'd get it spot on everytime. I understand that this is inevitable with fuel costing much more. I don't want to wait longer for my fuel to dispense just because I want to watch it count up by each penny.

ANYWAY.

Today I stopped it dead on £10.00. It's the work hack, and I wasn't putting more in than I needed (bit of a faff getting the cash back from employer - I'd rather he filled it next time instead of leaving me out of pocket for a while). Anyway it stopped dead on £10.00. It was £10.00 when the nozzle was put back into the holder, and it was £10.00 when I double checked what pump number I was before walking to pay.

It was NOT £10.00 when I got to the till though. It was £10.02. I went back out to the pump, which was also showing £10.02.

But I KNOW it was showing £10.00 when I left it.

Grrrrrrr.

More stations need to have pre-selectble amounts of fuel on the pump so you can buy exactly £10 or whatever of fuel. Very common on the continent and in the US but I've only seen it at one station in the UK.

Did it not have a penny pot at the checkout?

They have a little button at the till to click it forward by 2p because they know it annoys people who are obsessive and like to put dead on .00p.

What you need to do is stop at .98p that really pisses them off.

That's my 2p's worth.

Only pennies, or could someone put their tuppence in it?

Tesco have this! £50 a week without fail. My ocd needs have been dealt with!

If you pay at pump, to the right you can hit a £1, £5 or £10 button to give you a figure before you start filling. It slows down when you're near your total then finally stops dead on the amount.

Superb.

It's called a penny pot for a reason, but there will always be a smart arse along with his tuppence to spoil it.

I adopted the system of only buying fuel in multiples of 4.55litres.

It is a bit annoying if your paying with cash.I keep the cup holder in my car full of change and always take a few pence when getting fuel as it always goes over.Either that or just stop a few pence before.

When I was in Ireland a few years ago, I filled up with Diesel, it came to €61 and a few cents. The cashier actually knocked it back on the till to €61 flat before I put my card in the machine.

That's never happened before, or since.
