What TT - S or RS?

I've quite fancied one of the Mk2 TTs for a while and now I am in the lucky position of being able to afford one. The TTS seemed the most likely buy but I've noticed that TTRS prices have dropped to a point where I can afford one (at a stretch).

Question: Whilst the TTRS has *the* engine to have (and all the 'baby R8' connotations), given that I am not a professional track driver, for a daily dual carriageway commute and occasional hoon, will I really benefit?

Cheers

If you can get the RS, the S is very good but needs a map to get round the huge turbo lag whereas the RS is just a monster.

The RS is better on fuel as well!!! and quite rare.

You need to drive them both really.

The S is hardly slow and I think generally better spec than the RS. Magnetic rife is standard which is a very good system.

How do the running costs stack up? The S is very reasonable to run for what it is.

Thanks for that. Only problem is I've just seen an RS in Sepang Blue cloud9

Fuel consumption: not a lot of difference real world.

Insurance: Can get either for a premium of ~£400 pa (woohoo)

Servicing: I guess the RS is a bit more.

I like the TTS. Well balanced and good fun. Hard to enjoy the RS without being illegal and/or dangerous.
Stroinc in these is a joy.

If you can afford the RS but nothing else (fuel, trackdays, fun drives, driving holiday) you won't see much benefit.

If the S gives you leftover funds to have fun with it you'll have more fun with it.

They're both good cars but the mill in the RS is on another level.

Thanks all for the advice and comments.

I need to save up some more pennies for an RS.

Do it, the soundtrack is just sublime and they feel very 'hot rod' - stacks of power in a tiny car.

My wife has a TTRS Plus Roadster - just clicked over 1000 miles and the engine is starting to loosen up.

It is OMG fast - the only car I have EVER driven that I felt would humble our beloved Griff 500.

TTRS Plus has 20 extra pokes and a few lightweight bits, sports exhaust, 174 limiter, sat nav and extended leather as standard, plus we opted for the comfort pack - park sensors cruise and auto lights and wipers (should have been standard on a 50k car but that is another story)

Only downside is the squeaky effin brakes, hey Doc?????.

We have a TT-S & I thought the RS would be too heavy on fuel as the mrs does 25k to 30k miles a year but not so according to a post on this thread...get the RS!

Like an R32 - whilst they 'can' do 30 MPG the noise under load is so addictive you'll find it's a fair way south in the real world wink

I've not heard anything more on the squeaky brake issue than 'the fix is coming'.

I am in a similar situation - the RS has grown on me hugely over the last couple of months.

Daytona grey looks stunning. The sound is fantastic.

Ps, anyone have an idea why I can't see the pictures others have posted?

You are at work and your system administrator doesn't want you wasting bandwidth wink

Owned a 2010 TTS, nice car but had a few annoying faults from new. Also found the engine a little laggy, not much shove below 2500rpm but on boost was fairly rapid. From what i've read the RS engine is amazing, grunt everywhere and sounds alot nicer than the 4 pot. If you have the cash i'd go RS.

If you get an RS make sure that any squeaky brakes are sorted by the dealer. Brembo/Audi are already rolling out a fix for this on RS3 and TT RS models. Includes new discs, pads and calipers from what I am hearing.
