Does anyone know of an online retailer that sells fitted tops? ie: shirts (especially casual/polo shirts) etc that are narrower at the waist than the chest?

My chest measurement is 10" larger than my waist and fitted clothing seems to have completely disappeared off the high street

(worst "i'm not a fat bd" thread ever, etc)

You're doing it wrong. Go eat a pie or 20. Or walk around wearing Under Armour all the time. But yeah, something I've noticed, too. Dying breed... the real money's going to be in making clothes that are wider around the gut particularly with patterns that make the gut look narrower. biggrin

Being of a smaller frame (and as my boss reminds me regularly, I am not Company Director calibre) I get my work shirts from TM Lewin. Not the best, but after trying other companies out, they do a good range of Slim Fit, Non Iron shirts, and different sleeve lengths which means I get a pretty good fit. They do have some more casual/going out shirts too.

The Slim Fit is perfect for me as I don't have the expense account tummy, and I used to hate the baggy material gathered around my waist. Now I think look pretty smart - fitting nicely around the shoulders and waist. They do an ultra slim fit too I think (the "John Francombe"?), but I don't think they do Polos.

I'm quite a similar size (about 8" bigger round the chest) and find that the Hackett and Ralph Lauren polo shirts are pretty good, though I can't remember which cut I go for off the top of my head. Shirts I've started buying from a tailor and paying an extra £10 to have them fitted, if you find anything off the shelf let me know!

Maybe a bit down-market for powerfully built company director types, but GAP has some fitted polos: poor people's vendor.

I had the same problem with shirts / suits. I find Red Herring fitted shirts and Ted Baker (wool) Endurance suits fit very well. Regular TM Lewin shirts were like wearing a bin liner (fit wise).

Normally I'm a small size but I tried on a couple of theirs over the weekend and they were properly tight (they were labelled as Custon Fit (rather than their Classic Fit). Even the medium size was on the slim side.

With regards to shirts, I've always found Ted Baker to air toward slim fit in their shirts more than other brands.

Poor vendor or not, I still find GAP the best for jeans tbh. Good value and a decent cut.

Buy some decent quality polo shirts, Google for a local tailor, stitcher, lady with a sewing machine etc, give measurements, get them to sew them up narrower.

Or if you have a sewing machine, do it your self or <sexist mode> ask mum, SWMBO etc to do it </sexist mode> How difficult can it be!?

This. I've got a couple that I've had for 5 years(!) and they still fit perfectly.

I sold suits for 3 years a while ago and over that entire time, literally thousands of suits, I could count on one hand the number of customers that had more than a 6" drop between chest and waist measurements.....PH truly is full of powerfully-built directors! wink

Meh. I'm 16.1/2" neck, 41" chest and 31" waist.
I was 17.1/2, 42, 38 before christmas though. hehe

Yeah they do tend to last quite a while. I've worn one out after 5 years literally wore through the seams in the arm pits.

Ooh. I'm officially powerfully-built, then. 32" waist, 40" chest! party

Actually, this thread suddenly explains something. I bought a 1940s wool army coat the other day and whilst it fit round the hips, it was really uncomfortable around the chest. Got two sizes up - comfy around the chest but overly loose around the hips.
