Gibson Les Paul Studio.

Any views or opinions on these ?

Or even on the newer models fitted with Min etune ?

Or should I save a few quid and buy the Epi version ?

This really depends on your budget. I personally play Gibsons and love them, so I'd always get a Gibson. Having said that, I have played my friends' son's Epi LP Standard and I think it's a very good guitar too. I'd forget about Min-ETune unless you frequently change the tuning during a gig or something.

Ah,yes,should have mentioned a budget.

ideally around £600..

Mun etune comment was more for discussion generally,I wouldn't need it.

I'm not up to date with current Gibson price, but I think you can get a Studio for that budget? If so, that's what I would go for. Junior is also a possibility but it would depend on which pick-up you prefer and whether you like flat or arched-top, etc, etc..... Are you getting it new or you don't mind second hand?

Got a mid 90's studio & it's a fantastic guitar. It is entirely a Les Paul, no different in feel & tone from it's big brother, just minus the binding & finish. I've had an Epi LP & for me there was no contest, the Gibson wins hands down.

Justin, thats what I was thinking tbh. Had a play with some cheaper versions and they sounded just wrong.

Looks like I may be able to get one off the bay for around that money or a bit less, not worried about buying used as long as its in good order with square frets.

Prefer the studio for its lack of bling.

Sweet! Here's mine from the other thread. It used to be my brother's but I pinned him down & gave him Chinese burns until he gave in & handed it over.

I have a Gibson Les Paul Standard, early 2000s. To be honest, the Studio may be the smart bet as the finish isn't all that brilliant on the Standard. Binding on the neck is a bit rough, lacquer on lots of the binding is a bit rough... The studios, being unbound and simpler, are probably a bit neater.

Don't go Epiphone (I had an Epi Les Paul Standard first); worse tuners, worse electrical bits, worse setup and finishing... none of these are deal breakers or unfixable - but by the time you've sorted them you can easily be close to Gibson money with none of the resale (and they have the wrong headstock).

Gibson over Epiphone, every time, if only for the resale values. I would recommend you have a try of a Gordon Smith as well, because they are great.

Just going to give this a bump, with a slight twist....

Looking around, it seems the 2013 Studio is around a grand now, and this appears to have lifted used values slightly.

A lot of £500ish Studios are in fairly heavy used territory, and whilst looking around I saw this...

PRS SE Bernie Marsden...

I know Guitarist mag rated it, and I quite like the sounds off youtube, but what do you lot think of them (PRS) in general, and this version specifically ?

I've got a PRS SE I bought from another PH'er & it's a very good guitar. Side by side with the LP studio, it's definitely an inferior machine in terms of tone & tuning stability.

However, it is butter to play, really nice. Commonly, people swap the pups in the cheaper PRS's & I'm told it transforms them. Mine is a Korean budget one, so maybe an unfair comparison & I don't know about the BM signature model. The obvious thing is to go and try them side by side, make your own mind up. smile

Now that is one ugly guitar. It doesn't look proportioned at all.

Double cutaway ones are nicer imo.

Hmm,maybe I will continue the search then...

I was tempted though,especially as I found a dealer doing 12 months 0 %.....

Actually, whilst on the subject, anyone know of a used dealer that would be worth keeping in touch with for something like this ?

My boy has a prs se, it was about £400 and is a lovely thing. Much better than anything else we tried at that price.
