I've finally decided that I need a new sat Nav after my Sirius sent me on a 20mile diversion and nearly made me late for a meeting. The problem being at the mapping data is our of date so it sent me down a new road as the second junction of a roundabout when it should have been the third. There have been a few occasions recently wher eth unit has failed to tell me when to get off at a junction and I've sailed past too.

So are there any GPS systems that actually update the mapping data when you update the camera database? It would also be quite useful to have traffic light cameras identified as well as speed. Also if it had traffic updates and Bluetooth for the phones.

It's a big ask but I know technology on these has come on leaps and bounds.

Thanks in advance

I don't think any sat-nav has instant map changes, and even the ones that update them every 3 months still use data collected a year or so before - supposedly because it takes that much time to process the new map data.

Although some (TomTom/Garmin) allow you to make 'local' corrections that you can share with the rest of the community - and it's up to them whether they use your shared info or not.

Do you have a smartphone - then it might be worth exploring one of Nav Applications

For Traffic I would point you at a TomTom Live device, which despite some issues, seems the best option in a SatNav. TomTom are releasing a new range - personally I'd probably wait and see what the feedback on them is for a few months before investing in them.

Just because the map is the latest - doesn't mean it will be correct even for roads many years old.

TomTom has Mapshare where owners can update maps, changes of roads, speed limits etc, and they get sent out quickly, much more quickly than map updates.

I had a 20 mile foray into Garmin ownership with their flagship nüvi 3598LMT-D before deciding it was crap and going back to another TomTom, a 1005 HDT&M, my 3rd TT Live.

To my mind the TT is the best device for live services, cameras, traffic etc.

As said there are new models in the wings but TT are a bit flakey for not delivering totally finished products, so I'd either get an existing model now, or wait till the new models have been out a few months before jumping in.

I've just replaced my TomTom 540 live with the new 1005 live. The 540 was good with a deadly accurate predicted arrival time the new 1005 is just superb, clear wide screen superb definition.
At the moment Halfords are doing it for £219 it now comes with 3 years map updates and 3 years HD services which includes speed cameras so is a real bargain for such a good unit.
The camera function is good I have a Road Angel Gem and so far the 1005's warning of cameras is as good as the Gem. A brilliant bargain buy at the moment

I've managed to get one for 189.99 from halfrauds as they had it for 199.99 with a tenner off yesterday. Went to collect today and they didn't have it so they are ordering it in and honouring the discount. Hopefully will have it Saturday!

So reading that article does it seem more sensible to get an app for our iphones?? Obviously a lot cheaper and I assume updates of software are more frequent? But can you get an app that will do traffic updates on the move, warn of mobile cameras as well as the static ones???

I use Google Navigation on my Galaxy S3. It is fantastic and a doddle to use but I only use it for shorter trips as it really works the phone and makes it hot and gobbles up the battery life.

I'd prefer to still have a separate sat nav unit and I'm liking the look of the Tom Tom ones.

Had mine a few days now and I like the simple improved lane guidance (you would have to be an idiot to get it wrong now) all of the camera alerts work as my Road Angel Gem so I think it's a significant step up from the already very good previous go live series. I noticed the price reduction typical eh! still the two bundles of free subscriptions worth it anyhow.

Yes I got the 3yrs of camera updates and traffic but also got lifetime of map updates. Now the new model is due very soon I'm sure people will be getting all this for about £150 in two months but I need it now so no point waiting.

Probably will be but as you say you need it now, as my 540 live is coming up for 4-5 years old now it has more than paid for itself in time and fuel saving so in 5 years time I'll update the 1005 with the latest

Well I've manage to find time this evening to have a play with it and I must say first impressions are not good.

It is SO SLOW - every time you try to do put in a command it takes between 5-10seconds to go through to the next menu. Do they all do this or is it faulty?

Also I don't have any cameras shown on there. I've set up an account and plugged it into the laptop but it doesn't seem to do anything - at least there aren't any indications on either the laptop of the satnav unit that anything is happening - this is strange as even my ancient Snooper Syrius showed it was updating!

Do the cameras update when out an about?
Does it ever need to be connected to the laptop other than to do a map update?
How do I know I have got the three years camera and go live service included as I haven't had to put in any serial number details and I haven't had confirmation in an email?

Sorry for so many questions but I'm guessing existing owners/users have already gone through this so it will put my mind at rest until I can call TomTom on Monday.

Edited to add - am I right in assuming you cannot charge it in the car whilst it is mounted and in use? All I got in the box is the bracket with a multi contact male contact on it , a USB cable with the same multi contact end and a lighter adaptor to fit the USB into. This means you cannot have the chargeing cable plugged in whilst it is in the bracket. So who would ever use the supplied in car charger as it means you can only charge it when it isn't in use ie when you aren't in the car. Now some cars isolate the 12v socket when the ignition is off - what a load of rubbish - unless I am missing something rather obvious!

First of all plug it into your computer via the USB, get your account with tomtom registered by following the instructions I'm asuming it came with the large fold out instruction sheet with the web-site address.
After that it takes a while to download all of the data but does just about fully charge the unit, you should have the USB lead which has the cigarette socket. There is a lot of data to load on so be patient.

My go 1000 certainly doesn't take that amount of time to go through the menu system , but it is slower than my last 750.

You can see the 3 year expiry date by going into the unit itself , flick through the menus and there is something , I think called "about live services" or similar.

You do need to connect to the pc to get software updates , you can check what version you have and what is presently available.

I think the cameras need switching on in the units menu system , plus you first need to download cameras for all or selected countries when you connect to the pc.

TomTom have their own forums and there is also Pocket GPS World's TomTom Forum if you have issues you can't get here

Well I will be returning this tomorrow - utter rubbish. I've tried to do the updates on FIVE occasions and it has crashed each time. The unit now has a blue screen of death and state no mapping information is available.

What a poor pice of kit, very very disappointed and think I will have to give Garmin a try.

That's a pity as I have had nothing but a good experience of the Live series. Not sure what could have happened did you follow the exact instructions i.e. take the unit out of the box and plug it straight into your computer?

I was looking for a replacement for my old TomTom One, but having read a large number of owner reviews on Amazon etc it appears that the technology has gone backwards. On the recommendation of another PHer I'm going to try the Co-Pilot app on my iPhone instead. Maps locally stored so no roaming charges while abroad.
