Hi everyone

Hopefully someone here will be able to help. On Friday evening, leaving Nottingham towards Tamworth, I was on the A52 (Brian Clough Way) on my way towards J2 of the M1 (S), when I had to stop at the roundabout shown in the image below, at the crudely marked 'X'. This roundabout has since been updated, it now has a 40 limit on the approach and is traffic light controlled.

http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/3551/raax5.jpg

Anyways, shortly after I stopped to comply with red lights, I see a flickering blue light in my rear view: an ambulance, clearly wanting to get through. The driver behind me beeps (three times), clearly expecting me to move forwards, over the red light. Indeed, traffic coming from the RHS, whose lights were green, had seen the ambulance hence had not started their progress and were hanging back. Not wanting to hold up the ambulance, I edge forward so I cross the stop line but without entering what would be the lane coming from my right (now, the stop line is situated slightly behind the give way lines shown, more sort of at the level of Y).

To my frustration, nobody else moved forward, so the ambulance still could not progress until the lights turned green.

Bottom line: I am scared I am going to get (another) three points for crossing a red light (again).

Does anyone know if there are red light cameras on this roundabout?

TIA

Not that I'm aware of.

PS. There are much more fun ways of getting from Nottingham to Tamworth than the M1 wink

Good Lord that was quick smile

Thank you for the reply smile

When was the last time you were on that road - have you been on it since the traffic lights were introduced?

The last time I was done for this was on the Wollaton road; I still don't know where the cameras are on that - on the off chance, do you?

Sorry to hear that. I got done with exactly the same scenario at some lights in Leicester. I mistakingly contested it, and got 3 points plus a larger fine for my trouble.

Next time, I will not go through a red light to let an emergency vehicle pass. The police made another enemy that day...

Don't know about Wollaton Road I'm afraid.

Last time I was at that island was a couple of weeks ago, I tend to avoid going any further into Nottingham than I must.

I apologise for misinforming you if there are cameras that I've missed, though.

williamp; thank you for sharing that. I am sorry that happened to you.

iRoll: thanks for the second comment.

Again, if anyone else has further info, please comment.

Generally, how do we identify these red light cameras? The pictures I have seen (http://www.speedcamerasuk.com/traffic-light-camera.htm) are pretty obvious, and there is nothing of the sort on Wollaton road that I have seen, and certainly nothing like that on the roundabout I showed: are there any other sorts that look different?

Thanks again.

Rob.

First off I think you mean junction 25 and, TBH it is a long winded way of getting to Tamworth as J25-J24 is longer than a quick trip round the ring road to J24 and the A42.

Anyways, as far as I know there are no traffic light cameras on that island but cannot be sure.

Yep, that was a typo, my '5' key does in fact work (see smile )

I know that is not the quickest route, yeah, but often do it in dark conditions to avoid the single carriageway A453.

Anyone have much experience with red light cameras?

No there are no red light cameras on that roundabout. Was trying to get to there on Friday afternoon but police had blocked all access to the M1 it seemed (as stated in an earlier post).

There is a red light camera on Ilkeston Road (about half a mile from where it turns into Wollaton Road). It is on the cross junction with Radford Boulevard I think, although this camera is fairly obvious.

Another red light camera to be wary of is on Derby Road heading towards A52, about half a mile from where Brian Clough Way starts.

But the A453 is at its best in the dark!

The lanes between Gotham and Kegworth are better though, then pick up the A42 at the same place you would've had you gone down the A453.

I believe that plod can instruct you to legally drive through a red light but not the ambulance. So next time, dont move.

Or let them drive your car out of the way. Then with a bit of luck the law may be changed to something more sensible.

That roundabout is on my daily commute to and from the office.

When the road works were taking place to alter the layout to it's current format (with a road going through the middle of the roundabout for the right turners heading from Derby to Long Eaton/Totn) I don't recall any works that looked remotely suspicious as far as cameras are concerned.

I'm 99% certain that the entire junction (and the new 40mph approach limits) are camera free.

Definitely no camera. I do the journey loads (unfortunately I have to leave the glorious city of Nottingham because the wife lives in Birmingham).

Possibly. Not far from the Shell garage roundabout.

Someone mentioned the A453 which goes straight to Junction 24, but I find that road mostly too straight to have any fun. And its absolutely lethal at night, especially in rain. Closing speeds of 140mph with crap visibility.

Yep - that's the one. For those who don't know, it covers the outbound traffic from Nottingham heading down Derby Road towards the A52 and M1 J25

I avoid that road whenever possible.

Crap in the day, as it clogs, and you end up pootling along at 20mph, and crap at night for the reasons you've stated!

What on earth is happening to our Country? You've moved out the way for an emergency vechile, as it states in the Highway Code as someone is in need of serious help. Yet, you get punished? What did the judge say?

Interesting, because I contested speeding through a fixed camera in Leicester to allow an emergency vehicle through and was handed an 'absolute discharge' for the offence. Prior to the case the Clerk to the Justices told me I was wasting everyone's time as nobody had been let off before - but thankfully the prat was proven wrong.

EDIT: BTW, research at the time showed that you do NOT have to make way for any emergency vehicle - it is up to them to find a way around you. (Although, obviously it helps them if you do get out of their way.)
