Got a bit of an Itch to get a new car at the moment, really like the GTi's / Cupra's so wanting to know what sort of running costs/mpg I could expect from these.

I am currently running a Fabia VRS which will do 45-50mpg on my current commute (approx 135 miles (round trip) of motorway driving)

I am getting a little bored of diesel so just working out how the above will compare, most my driving is business mileage so I make recovery from it.

Could I expect 35-40mpg average whilst still having a bit of fun?

Yes. We average over 35mpg from our 2.0TFSI manual. Driving like a learner we get 40mpg. It does drop to low 30s if you enjoy revving it often though.

In the real world and driven sensibly you will be lucky to average more than about 32mpg overall. Steady motorway run at legal limit and you may see about 38, but not eay to achieve.
Start having fun to any extent and you will see mid 20s.

I have a Golf GTi Edition 30 DSG .... normal outer London type driving gives about 27-28 mpg. Given a bit of stick it returns about 24 mpg. On a motorway run it can go up to 36 mpg (have seen 38 mpg displayed on a motorway run) but a trip incorporating a bit of A road and motorway usually returns 32 mpg.

Seriously considering making the same move myself - It WILL cost noticably more going from diesel, but the VAG 2.0T seems to be quite reasonably economical compared to other rivals (albeit requiring super unleaded)

The MPG for this engine is sensitive to fuel type, length of journey and driving style.

I've seen loads of people struggle to better 25mpg average, yet I've achieved 34-35mpg average over 33000 miles, mostly in stop start around the M25 and A roads.

Main differences are -
my journeys average 40 miles , so not short 5-10 mile journeys
I use 99 octane only
and I anticipate traffic conditions so brake use is not heavy.

There does seem to be a wide differential between mpg achieved by different people with the same engine. To me a Golf GTi is not a sports car, it is a great all-rounder with plenty of power to have a bit of fun now and then, and great power/handling to get you out of trouble if needed. As a result I don't drive it like I'm trying to wear the door handles out or find the rev limiter every gearchange.

Interestingly, I drive the car faster than my other half while achieving a few mpg better economy on average.

So in summary, those with low figures either drive less efficiently (i.e. try harder), or really drive their cars hard most of the time.

Edited to add: OP - if you're used to a turbo diesel then I'm sure you will get good mpg from the 2.0T engine. It delivers its best if you surf the torque and don't rev it too hard - similar to a diesel in that respect (aaarrgghh!).

I picked up a totally mint June 08 GTI Mk V yesterday with just 5500 miles for my wife...filled her up with BP ultimate almost straight away and then added 205 miles driving home average 40.2mpg ! Gauge read 5/8 full, range 280.

Can't believe that's going to continue to happen but just shows what can be done on a long run of mostly motorway.
Got out of the leather chairs feeling that I could have driven a fair bit further.

So far impressed with the car.... Just need to sort out a few things like adding iPOD connector to the inbuilt Sat Nav

I did sort of fancy DSG but two mates at work who have IT (TT 3.2 & Mk5 TDI) put me off.
Anyway this car came up at the right price/Mileage and I have not seen that many GTIs with Leather. Quite a costly option I understand

AND remember its the wife's car, I have a BMW 335D Coupe. But now the practical Golf has replaced her MINI Cooper S I can have something a bit more err impractical

I realized a long time ago that on forums
like what you like
Don't like the you don't like
and don't try and reason with others that feel otherwise

I would like to try a DSG/s-tronic in something with a bit of power. I'm still tempted by a new S4, rather than spending a lot of a car.

Back to topic on MPG Just been for a 20 mile run with some err spirited driving to start which saw the mpg at sub 20...by the time I got home its showing 34.6 which is probably more realistic

Thats much lower than I anticipated... I average 31-33mpg in my Fiat Coupe 20V Turbo doing 15-18k a year the Fiat official combined is 28mpg and the extra urban is 36mpg.

I drive it quite hard too and on M way usually sat at 0.8 - 0.9 leptons and every day use the full rev range.

So given that its a 12 year old engine & gets a dose of Tesco Unleaded all the time how can the far newer and far more fuel efficien GTI unit deliver so badly??

Weighs more with all the airbags, safety gizmos etc.
