Hi, I'm looking to change car in the next few weeks.

Was thinking about getting the 170 bhp diesel with a DSG box.

Any thoughts you can offer would be great.

thanks

The other 2 considerations are a 320d sport or A4 2.0 tdi s-line.

I have an A4 at the moment and as much as I like it I fancy a change ( I think.. )

It LOOKS fantastic but no doubt it will be as numb as the rest of the current VAG products on offer at the moment

I am basing my opinion here on having an 8p A3 170tdi and a B8 A4 170tdi

They looked great but they just didn't feel special to drive, seeing as the passat is based on a similar platform I can't see it being different

The looks of the Passat can't be faulted I think they look fantastic

Looks fantastic and very nice inside, but I have a feeling its long term residuals will be poor, and at the end of the day its essentially just a stretched Golf.

The Passat Saloon, CC and Estate use a streched version of the Golf 5 platform.

Had a ride in the back of one a few months back. It was the most luxurious car I've ever travelled in and I've been in high end Porsches, BMWs and Mercs. It was just so quiet and smooth. I was really impressed!

However, it probably isn't great to chuck around and I think the electric handbrake would irritate me.

Nice looking car and probably a very smooth drive, however, considering the weight, that engine won't set your trousers on fire...

Recently either autocar or autoexpress dod a Passat CC v Audi A5. They rated the A5 as the better car but also said the Passat as a very good machine. What about an Alfa 159 2.4jtd or a Seat Exeo 2.0d Sport?

I'm in the same position as you, and also added the c-class to that list. After looking at them all, I have ordered the CC!

For something of that nature (a mid-range, diesel, 4 door saloon) ultimate driving dynamics are just not that relevant, so it comes down to aesthetics, kit, comfort, refinement and cost. Mine will replace a company car, so BIK also plays a part.

Without any preconceptions (other than I had pretty much decided against the 3-series) I genuinely expected to go for the Merc', but really didn't like it. The A4 is very nice, inside and out, but I've had one before and it's nice to have a change.

Alfa 159 Ti, as already mentioned, was also tempting (it's a much bigger car than the 156 incidentally), but I couldn't make the lease price work for me.

Thought I'd add: With the ride set to "comfort" it's very waft-aroundable(!), on "sport" it's almost as harsh as my Saab. The electric handbrake actually becomes second nature almost immediately - press to release when you first move off and that's it. When you come to a stop it applies automatically and releases when you pull away. MUCH easier to live with than the C-class' that I also test drove foot operated nonsense.

So much more purposeful looking and generally allround more lovely than the merc or bm or Audi for the money. The 3series doesnt even come close. Get one in black or bronzey brown.

I agree. I'd totally forgot about them, I've not seen one out here, but I'm seriously considering trading the bm in for one if available.

I've considered one in my never ending 'don't know which car to buy' saga. I just find the back end a bit odd (front aspect is great) and the two rear seats could be a bit restricting.

I've got one as a company car. It's a 140 manual CC GT.

It's great, took my wife, 1 kid, 1 dog and me back and forth to France to see the family in quiet comfort.

I went for the 140 for 2 reasons:
-1 because of the tax on the 170 wink
-2 because even with the smaller diesel, the front wheels will spin off the light. It's enough to overtake on B roads.
All in all I didn't see the point of a more powerfull engine for waht is essentially a cruiser and will never be a sports car.

Plus points: sound proofing, suspensions, comfort ("sport" seats are very hugging), stereo, space inside, space in the boot (bigger than standard Passat), looks.

Bad points: not a sports car, like to understeer if too enthusiastic driving, bodywork shape makes it prone to dents in supermarket car parks...park away! Not good for very tall people in the back because of slopping roof line.

I love mine!
