Assuming that one is not entirely neanderthal in these matters, what is an appropriate first wedding anniversary present for a husband to give to his wife? And should the list include an eternity ring?

First w/a is traditionally paper, but if I'm going to go that route it would have to be something a little "different". And yes, I *could* make an origami paper eternity ring, I'm sure, but.......

Tickets for a 2 week break somewhere disgustingly indulgent.

I thought eternity rings were after the kids have grown up a bit? Year one sounds a bit optimistic...

Newspaper from the day she was born - Its paper, its relevant to her and offers the illusion of some thought having gone into it.

Just give her a 50 quid note and let her buy what she wants wink

Didn't know about the clocks thing Mitz, thanks.

Seems that the eternity ring thing has several different options - kids, long-term anniversary, renewal of vows, etc. However, I'm getting on a bit so maybe she should get some use out of one whilst I'm still around!

What about a nice photo or a painting?

If you want to be treacly how about a framed love poem.

If you don't want to be subtle a list of all the expenses she has encumbered you with over the last year.

Stay away from more expensive stuff, otherwise you'll just set a precedent. Especially eternity rings - that's way down the line!

Something nice made out of paper - flowers / nice origami / lovely book is perfect for the first wedding anniversary.

How about The 52 Weeks of Naughty Nights? biggrin

Tickets for a concert, sporting event, theatrical performance, or even a second honeymoon? Just make sure it’s an event that your spouse will enjoy.

Of both kinds! (Pearls are the 'stone' for the first anniversary!)

Funny the OP posted this actually, our 1st anniversary is in March and as we've agreed not to buy gifts I was looking for something small to get her in addition to the ridiculously expensive hotel we are going to.
So far I've gone for some silly Origami books, the pearl necklace is a bit pointless as she has several already (and she will be wearing one of my own that weekend anyway!)
Thought about framing my wedding day speech as it was a bit soppy in parts and women love that sort of st.

Perhaps a letter too!
Nothing says, “I love you,” more than a thoughtful, candid, handwritten love letter.
It’s old-fashioned and sweet and will warm her heart.

That's a nice idea, I was really sad when my husband's speach was stolen as although I was obviously there for it, in all the excitment, I couldn't remember the content and thought I had forever to read it properly........... It was in his jacket pocket it wasn't the speach the thieves were after, I mean it was good; but it wasn't that good biggrin Sad something priceless to us worth nothing to anyone else furious

Pearl necklace
My Commercial Director walked in this morning after having yesterday off for his 30th wedding anniversary, just in general conversation I asked what the 30th was and got told "pearl", the office was a peach as I asked "pearl necklace for the mrs then?"
