Amazing how much energy is absorbed by the destruction of the composite structure - FRP always looks horrendous after an impact but by then its job is done. If that was wooden or aluminium I think he would have been toast.

Something was wrong from the start there - he was wobbly and got his wheel down straight off the tow, looked low too - broken rope?

Old news.... this happened nearly a month ago at the Shoreham Air Show. Photographer obviously not up to speed with developing his snaps! Great images though!

It wasn't covered that much in the media at the time. The pictures are top quality and very revealing. The pilot was very lucky,. Hope he makes a good recovery.

A couple of friends of mine crashed the microlight/small plane they were flying a while ago. They landed from about 1000 feet onto some trees. How both survived I have no idea, though they were a mess.

It was apportioned to a bolt shear failure of the tail section and as far as I'm aware litigation against the manufacturer is still ongoing.

Sorry if this is a silly question, but is that a parachute he's wearing? Is that normal? Either way, if he cracked several vertebra, that prob saved him from much worse.

yes, and yes.

Its common practice in the UK to always wear a parachute in a glider.

He would also almost certainly have a been sat on an 'energy absorbing' impact cushion, which would also have helped save him..
