RNLI Lifeboat funding.......a ******* disgrace.

Whilst on holiday a couple of weeks ago, I decided to call to have a look round Cromer lifeboat station in Norfolk.

As you would imagine, the place was spotless, very well run and had a (fairly) brand new boat, which I was told cost around £3m...the cost of which was met by bequests from two main elderly benefactors, (One for over £1m)...as well as donations from the public.

As you probably know, these craft are crewed by members of the public, Bank managers, Carpenters, Shopkeepers, Teachers, etc etc...all giving up their time and risking their lives for free.....There was a long list on the wall of all the incidents that this station had been called out to over the years, saving many many lives.....

Surely the funding for this wonderful service should come from central government, like it does in many other countries?..........

Imagine our police force having to relay on donations from the public.......

I'd be rather intrigued to see the breakdown of expenses for the RNLI, someone I know does some work at their headquarters/training centre (Poole harbour?) and has commented in the past on how much money appears to be 'wasted' on the corporate/staffing side of the RNLI. (Similar to a number of charities I'd imagine)

The RNLI are one of the few charities I am happy to chuck a quid or two into a pot for as the work the crews do is astounding and they get nowhere near enough recognition for their work.

Err, so there is a service that works well and has no funding issues and you want to change it? Wouldn't it be a good idea to change the funding of other emergency services to the same model?

Things can work perfectly well without the involvement of the state.

Good for them. I hope they can afford the very latest in safety equipment for themselves and everyone they try and save.

You'd also be surpirsed that the air ambulances are funded through charities, but the police helicopter isnt.

Woohoo no more resources wasted on speeding motorists. How do we get this pushed through.

But yes OP they do an incredible job, could not think of anything less I would rather be doing than being stuck in the office middle of summer bored out of my mind to get a call to rag a rib across the sea to rescue some rich fk on a boat who's choked on his smoked salmon.

I believe a lot of the crews are or have been seamen i.e. fishermen and suchlike. Apparently it is quite hard to get into a crew and normal UK HR HSE PC bks does not apply.

Interesting RNLI fact - there are many RNLI stations in the Republic of Ireland - probably the only 'Royal' institution left there.

I love the RNLI. They achieve.
If you go somewhere with one of the new Tamar class boats, it's well worth a look. Amazing machines, and a fine example of what this country can produce.
