I had to dig out my race boots to drive a car with a very small pedal box recently and feared I'd look like a wannabe. Everybody had them though, so I plan to use them all the time now, along with some decent gloves.

Worth noting that Silverstone at least are adopting a policy of Helmet checking soon to ensure they meet their required standards, The new(ish) bike std ECE22.05 will not be acceptable, the following are apparently OK for this Year at least

BS6658 Type A/FR

BS6658 Type A

SNELL SA2005

SNELL SA2000

FIA 8860-2004

SFI Foundation 31.1A, 31.2A

Lotus On Track mail just received - Important changes to Helmet requirements
After over 2 years of warning that we expected circuits to bring in MSA requirements for crash helmets both Silverstone and MSV have now stipulated that crash helmets used on ALL car track days must comply with current MSA regulations.

Isn't that typical, was on my way to Demon Tweeks a few weeks ago, stopped off on the way at a motorcycle shop that was closing down and - you guessed it I bought 2 motorcycle helemts in the sale (one for me and one for the wife). We've done one trackday and now will probably still need to visit Demon Tweeks and buy 2 more helmets - the wifes not happy.

Do helmets sell well on ebay ??????

What's people's views on either of these for the occasional track day (and a limited budget) in a normal open-top sports car ?

TIA .......
These helmets aren't MSA approved.....they are the European ECE-R 22.05 jobbies!

In fact, 99% of the helmets advertised anywhere have the ECE-R 22.05 and not any of the MSA recomended logo!!!!

Can anybody find a helmet satisfying the MSA requirements??

Yes they do sell well surprisingly!

I am guessing 99.9999999999999% of times you will be fine with your new lids!

I've never seen anyone have a problem before.

It sounds liuke they are still at most circuits. Also at Silverstone/MSV tracks if they meet certain standards. But in the future it shows a trend towards higher standards. Which might end up as being helmets approved for car racing. And one assumes full nomex overalls or we'll have perfect heads, and crispy bodys in the event of fire.

Then they'll start asking for HANS devices, roll cages, plumbed in fire extinguishers, electrical cut-outs on the bonnet, etc.

They'll just be shooting themselves in the foot if they think they can take up the price of the track days and expect the average punter to be able to afford all this extra safety equipment. You might as well get into club racing instead.

Some people are confused. BS 6658 Type A is a 'bike helmet' (althoug lesser Type B helmets are also available, usually very cheap and of thermoplastic construction). Currently thats all you need to compete in a non-FIA/international race. From next year youll need a BS6658 Type A/Fireproof helmet; which will offer the same crash protection but with a fireproof lining. It would be foolish for trackday organisers or venues themselves to adopt this is when they dont require any fireproof clothing...

Sad isn't it, what us PHers uphold as the last bastion of freedom in the ever increasing nanny state is now also getting interfered with.

Roll on requirements outlawing anything other than logbooked cars running on cicuits... frown

In the meantime, where can I buy an approved sticker for my current lid? If it was OK last month then it is OK this month in my book. biggrin

To be honest. You should have all those things if you are going at any real speeds.
