What is so difficult about roundabouts?

There's something to your right so you wait for it to pass.
Assuming that it is in the correct lane and signalling of course. Anyhow, if in doubt you wait, right?

So why do so many people see you, slow to a virtual stop, wait, wait a litte longer, look straight at your face (yes that's how close they are) and then pull out in front of you.

No big deal if they have a fast car and are turning right out of your way. If they have the balls then ..Go for it!

But so many are slow cars like the Corsa at lunchtime who I nearly piled into the side of. They don't even attempt to speed up and they are going the same direction. Corsa got main beam and horn. I wonder whether he'd have liked me cutting him up and slamming my brakes on? There really is little difference between that and what he did. I didn't of course.

What grates even more is that this often happens when there is no other traffic following behind so the impatient driver will not be stuck there waiting.

I do often expect trucks to carry on regardless as they don't brake like a car and they take a while to get going again, it's to be expected and you make allowances.

It now appears that it is quite normal to have to stand on the brakes to let people in cars crawl out in front of you.

And to be clear, I always have good lane discipline and always signal my intent - perhaps this confuses them as most cars don't bother indicating nowadays!

But that's a whole different topic wink

Its the retards that indicate right, then left (or just left) to go straight on that get me. This is on a simple 4-way single lane roundabout.

Looks like it is not too common then, thankfully!

Maybe I should move to a different county where drivers are less retarded smile

That'll be it. They're all wondering what those strange flashing lights are...and what they mean.rotate

I signal just left when going straight over at a rounderbout (immediately after the exit beforehand)

Fair enough, but people should be able to see you are coming off at the junction due to position and where you came from (assuming everyone knew when to indicate)

The thing that gets me is people who indicate left, skip a junction then come off at the one after.

Coincidence that you should post this today of all days, because I have a tale...

I don't usually get upset at stuff like this, but this morning at a roundabout just at the end of the road where I work, I was going round the roundabout when a liveried lwb transit towing a very distinctive trailer waited until I was almost in front of him, and pulled out of his road. Anchors on, he turns and laughs, flicks the Vees and carries on. bd.

And then, at lunchtime there, I was waiting in the snack shop round the corner when this same van and trailer pulls up outside. Driver gets out and asks if they sell cigarettes. No was the answer. So I gave him directions to another van that sells cigarettes. Helpful eh? I'm all forgiveness, me...

Except that other van may not exist. And if it does, it would be at the end of a narrow bendy track where he wouldn't be able to turn round and would have to reverse his stupid van and trailer all the way back out. Double bd...

This seems to be a common, current occurrence - like the moron this morning who went from the left of me (the left turn marked lane) - I was in the middle lane (to go straight ahead) - and he went accross my bow and went right... Fortunately I work in Rotherham so I've come to expect such weapons grade idiocy and let him get on with it (and beeping my horn afterward).

It sounds as though he may be a pikey, and a pikey never forgives or forgets. I'd be worried now.

Same roundabout - on Monday - I'm going straight ahead and the guy on my left looks at me, twice, and pulls out. Slowly.

Moron.

Driving standards seem to have dipped recently.....

I’m shocked by the amount of people who use the right hand lane to go straight (take a 12 o clock exit). Every night I drive home via a busy roundabout, and there’s always an equal amount of people queuing in both lanes to take the 12 o clock exit (a standard 4 junction). It’s always carnage but I honestly do believe some people just don’t know the rules.
Someone who I work with has cut me up there on a few occasions doing this; I eventually questioned him, to which he responded “No, you can use both lanes when going straight over”.

I will guiltily admit to this. At a roundabout near me there's usually a huge queue on the left, none on the right. The markings on the road say to use both lanes, and there is a short stretch of dual lane road after the roundabout. usually there's no problem but if I do end up next to someone also going round I make sure I slow down and let them go first, wait till the striaght and (having been indicating left since half way round the roundabout) slot in behind them. I can honestly say it's only ever caused a problem once when some guy in an MPV objected to me merging in front of him. I gave him a wave and got out of his way as soon as I could (bizarrely it widens to two lanes again after about 30 meters). I do feel bad about it, but am careful that I don't cut people up and make sure I stay in my lane. If the person behind the guy I am slotting in behind really boots it I just stay out and go slowly. If it weren't for the road markings saying it's OK I wouldn't do it.

I think everyone uses both lanes on dual carriage ways, nothing wrong with that, trouble is the roundabout I mentioned is a single carriageway, so you end up with people in the left lane trying to protect their turf, and people in the right trying to force their way into it. Which usually results in beeping horns and revving engines.

Maybe it's changed, but that's what I was taught to do.

Makes sense to me - If someone's signalling right on a roundabout, you KNOW they're not coming off at your exit; if they're signalling left, they are.

If they're not signalling at all, I'm obviously too retarded to be able to read their superior minds...

Of course, it must have changed, because I was also taught to approach a roundabout look to the right to see if it was clear and then proceed accordingly. Most people who've learnt to drive in the last 10 years seem to have been taught to stare intently ahead of them, brake to a complete stop on the white line and then look right to see if there's anything on the roundabout... Plus ca change...

Personal bug bear of mine this.... two lane entry with two lane exit,so wide enough for two cars you would assume, but why then do people decide to not stay in their chuffing lane when entering the roundabout? the ammount of times they have cut accross me when im in the left hand lane i deliberatly hold back now so not to be anywhere near them just in case.

I really really REALLY hate it when some tt in a Polo decides to let traffic ONTO the roundabout.

Happened this morning. Me being a cyclist, roundabouts are difficult enough with trying to make sure i'm not in anyone's way and going fast enough so I don't hold everyone up.

I was going round in the outside lane, and all of a sudden, a Polo stops and lets traffic out, but there's a hesitation from said traffic as its stupid. I keep cycling as I know the highway code (I was grumpy too) and almost get hit by a white Transit. Which I won't blame on him, as naturally he wouldn't've known what to do...

I was taught that if its a 2 lane entry then you should be in left lane if you are taking the first left junction off the roundabout only. If you are not taking this junction then should be in right hand lane. You signal right only if you are taking a junction after 12 o'clock and start signalling left when you pass the exit before the one you want.....no?!

Oooh, roundabouts, what is it these days on say a four exit roundabout, I am directly facing another car and I want to turn right, so I am crossing their lane, therefore it is their right of way.
They just sit there staring blankly into space waiting for me to go, then a car to my right pulls up, now BOTH of them have priority over me and here we are, the three amigos all sat like tools waiting for someone to make a move, it's like a fking speed dating seminar at this point.
After what seems like hours, me, the one with absolutely fk all right to do so drives on and turns right.
