Hi all

I'm stuck at the moment looking for a car for about £2/2.5k to get me through the winter and sell on in the spring. The reason being is that I'm with a 'fun' car at the moment and would like something I can enjoy over the winter whilst I save for my next car.

What I would like is a car that will hold most of it's value and be easy to push on come the spring time. The obvious thought is a tidy MX-5 which should sell once the sun comes out.

However, I'm wondering if there is anything that I've over looked that I should be considering. The factors along with the ability to sell it on quickly are that is has to be fun and engaging to drive. I'm not looking for much else beyond that.

The shortlist is currently:
MX5 (Mk1 1.8)
MG ZS 2.5 V6 - http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1280936.htm (I love the reason this one is being sold!)
VW Golf VR6 - http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1353767.htm

Any thoughts? Anything a bit left field that could be good?

For £2k and depreciation-proof to exist in the same sentence, you're going to have to go "boring" and "mainstream".

I needed a car a couple of years ago and bought a 1.8 Passat for under your budget. Twas the most sleep-inducing transport I ever owned, but 3 months later it made exactly what I paid for it.

Not proof but resistant, I'm aware that I'm going to loose a little money on it. I just want something that's fun and going to be easy to sell in the spring / summer

I bought a Mk III Golf GTI 8v for £750 and even after doing things that need doing, I'm confident I can get my money back. It's not fast but it is fun and eminently hurlable and nicely compact. I also think that the GTI badge still gives you a smidge of street cred. A 16v would be even better...for the right money and I've seen a few on ebay.

BMW 318Ti Sport, circa 1998.

Cracking little cars to drive and a lot of fun.

Very much like a go-kart smile

I wouldnt go near the ZS, but the owner sounds interesting!

CRX is a good shout, maybe an MR2 or a FTO? I know you could pick up some smart examples for £2k.

If you're after a hatch, then how about a 1.8 Focus? Fairly common, but they do handle well and can be thrown around the roads with some decent rubber on them.

mx5 really suits the bill here- fun, cheaper to buy now because it's winter and near christmas- come spring / summer, and you'll have people knocking at your door for a nice little soft top. Buy ones that needs a little attention, fix her up, and you might even make a small profit

that's what I've been thinking most of the time, there are plenty out there for good money, just need to find one that fits the bill.

The annoying thing is that I turned down one from a PHer last spring as I wasn't in the right place to buy one.

I disagree, interesting cars just stop depreciating after a while. Look at that Golf VR6 he linked too, good ones have been £1.5-2k for ages. I don't think he'd lose much money on it unless he put 50k on the clock.

To the OP: That MGZS 180 will need the cambelt replacing soon, which is an eight hour job so quite expensive.

I concur with the MX-5 comments to be honest.

Fun, cheap and sell at the right time and you won't lose a fortune. smile

can I ask why? And is it based on any real world experience?

I ask because on the net and specifically PH there's a lot BS about Rover products that I can't agree with based on my own experience. As a family we've had a lot of Rover products, I would estimate in the region of 30 or 40 over the years including an MG ZS180. On the whole they have been very very good and little trouble. The ZS was owned by my brother and it never put a foot wrong. Not a single thing bar a battery in the keyfob remote.

It was also very good to drive as good as a BRM nut a bit more agressive. This making it the joint best fwd car I've driven this side of a DC2 ITR. The V6 made a nice noise, was grunty but still happy to rev. It was fairly quick matching the perfoance stats of an Accord Type R fairly good on fuel and practical too. The recaro front seats where very supportive and comfy. On top of that servicing cost about the same as a bag of peanuts.

you shouldn't have stopped buying them, they might still be going ;-)
