A lot of these electronic gizmos were standard on the Volvo 480 at launch in 1987:

Automatic rear wiper when engaging reverse.
Two speed rear wiper.
If driving with the wipers on, when flooring the accelerator the front wipers would switch to full speed.
"See you home" sidelights.
An LED would illuminate in the lock cylinder if you lifted the door handle first.
LED in keyhole would also stay on for 15 secs after closing the door to facilitate locking it.

Of course by 1988 most of them had stopped functioning laugh

I do miss that car sometimes.

I like the filler flap and cap design on my 156. The cap sits on top of the filler flap whilst refueling, simple and brilliant.

I like the 20gig hard drive in the Bose stereo in my Mazda. Instead of having an ipod hanging around looking messy with wires you just dump your music collection onto the HD and forget it. You can also record directly from CD onto HD. Good for OCD sufferers like me who hate wires and gadgets rolling round the dash!

The red and blue illuminiation you get on the dials in VWs smile
Prefer the white & red Audi ones myself. Agree with you on dials though. I'd think twice about buying a car if it had crap coloured dials (Toyota for instance).

Main thing for me is wing mirrors. Genuinely thing hideous mirrors can ruin a car. Look at the current Lexus IS. Ghastly things on that!

Being able to shut the windows from the key fob. I never get tired of this.
I just discovered that my car has this function; no idea when I'll ever use it but it is pretty cool. Another vote for the nightpanel switch on the Saabs as well. Finally, has anyone mentioned LED DRLs yet?

Oil temp guage. My Mk2 Golf GTi 16v had one on the computer. Always amazed me how much longer it took fo rhte oil to get up to temp than it took the water.

Never had a car since that's had such a thing.

OK, some of these not so obscure but here goes anyway...:

The one touch drop down rear headrests on my dad's old 300 CE Merc.

Ford QuickClear heated windscreen on the Focus RS.

Ford Capless Fuel Filler on the Focus RS.

Infinitely adjustable (within limits) intermittent wipe timer on my old Mk3. Golf GTI.

Red Seatbelts in my old Metro biggrin

Wipers that stop when the vehicle is stationary on the E36 3 Series, and I presume all subsequent models?

Was at the petrol station earlier when another MINI Cooper S pulled up at the pump opposite. I noticed the driver attach the petrol cap to the flap, to stops it dangling down onto the paintwork. Turns out there's a 'holder' built into the flap. My mind was blown idea I'd never noticed this feature before and always got annoyed at the cap dangling about laugh

Wife's Focus has front screen demister thing, something good that's not as common as it should be, esp in V cold parts...
Didn't Ford protect the heated windscreen technology for 20 years, or something like that? I was under the impression that other manufacturers would be able to do it soon.
Had this as an option on my 2006 Passat - electrically heated front screen.

1970s BMW 3.0 CSL we owned, fuel filler cap....

rear number plate hinges down to reveal filler cap, very 007 in its day.
As did the DAF 55....I think. It was many years ago, might have been the Volvo 66 actually.

Ok without meaning to turn this into a bhfest, is your salesman an asshole? I always tell the customers about that, which has been built in to every Vauxhall and Kia I have sold, plus a few more. Really helps prevent those annoying little scratches around the filler cap.

I don't think Ford did have the exclusive, think the tech belongs to Pilkington glass. Both my Mercs (1989 SL and 1998 S500) use this technology for the heated rear screens.

I love the self closing doors / boot on my Merc

I really like the idea of the Merc wing mirrors that dip when you put it in reverse. Pity you can only get them on Mercs.
...and the Alfa Brera and Spider, possibly 159 too. Comes as part of the electric seats pack, I think.
And on my 20 year old BMW...
Ever tried em reversing a trailer USELESS
why's that?
With the Citroen when you're in reverse you can adjust the reverse position - it remembers that, move out of reverse and it switches back to the normal remembered position.
Is that the same for everyone else?
No the cars I've, I did'nt ever find a way to stop it or adjust it without doing so manually every time
On my Volvo, just select reverse, if you want the mirror to drop, just touch the mirror button, select drive (forward), mirror reverts to normal..

So it is just Mercs then..!

Audis have the dipping mirrors too.

Its stupid but the little extra sun visor on the mk1 A3 and the mkIV Golf over the rear view mirror, genius feature.
