Just interested to see peoples reactions to the larger charities. I make a point of giving x amount a month to a different charity and am always very careful in the same month as children in need or comic relief to give my normal and then donate to these as well as I feel smaller charities may get overlooked when there is such a hugely publicised charity event on.
Paradoxically, by giving to causes like Comic Relief / Children in Need you are supporting smaller causes since CR / CiN in turn provide funding to others.
Vital sources of revenue since many smaller concerns (children's hospices and community rugby to name two that I'm personally involved with) have had all Lottery funding cut to pay for that Great White Elephant, the 2012 Olympics.

always happy to throw a fiver/tenner here and there, whether it's children in need, comic relief or even PHers doing something.
Remember, it may be you requiring the help of a charity one day...

I have donated to children in need. It's only a few quid for me, and if that can go towards helping the needy, then so much the better.
The charities I consistently support I give to by Direct Debit, so that is a regular income. Regrettably the practical stuff I do has to be on a spontaneous basis, but I feel bad about that, wish I could commit to a regular hour a week or whatever.
I'll still happily make a donation to an event like this, as a one off.

I'm with you Majooo, I went out with a friend of mine one night into town, wealthy young lad, his dad is in the top 50 of the Times Rich List - came across a guy asking for £3 for the YMCA, he called up a local hotel and booked him into a room on his credit card.
He said he felt better knowing he was getting his head down and a nice breakfast rather than adding that £3 to what he already had and him buying some ale with it.
I wish I had more money to help people.

Its like giving the local crack head a £20 note.
They always want more!
So what?They always want more!
If a relatively small sum to us can make a big difference to someones life for even a few days its worth it.
