budget for replacing/fixing at least 2 wings (front or rear) per race... and anything less at a race is a bonus smile
Perhaps we could come to some arrangement with all the 'spares' you collect? hehe

I will try to come to a few rounds and get a few pictures of the PH Caterham. Will defiantly do the Oulton Round but will try to get to a few more!

It's a fiver under £18k for the bare kit. That's without it being built, without paint and without some extras which are useful/desirable like seats
Pfft, seats. Two bin bags and some two-part expanding foam, jobs a goodun.

(the fact that I couldn't fit in a tillet had nothing to do with my choice)
Like they do in F1

I've just finished the 2009 Academy and costs:-
18.0K car/race fees/ARDS
2.5K build & paint
2.5K trailer
1.5K 'kit' race suit/helmet/hans etc etc
1.5K accident damage
.5K race insurance
.75K track/testing days
.25K hotels
.5K fuel

Total 26.5K

Sounds a lot, but I have gained...............

A bunch of mates second to none
A modicum of racecraft
A fantastic experience
Memories of drafting & overtaking at 'real' race tracks such as Brands Hatch
The motivation to go into next seasons Roadsport B championship - along with a fair number of said mates

Car is worth around 15K

I have replaced 2 rear wings - circa £80 each and self colured (Black/Red/Green/White/Blue)
A nose cone - circa £110.00 (As above)

Majority of costs were repairing rear panel (Twice) after a test day (Backwards into the ARMCO at Lydden Hill) and a rear end 'nudge' at Anglesey.

Most if not all competitors are mindful that we are all on a limited budget and therefore drove accordingly - though knocking off a wing given the above costs was not considered a proper shunt!

Managed the season on 6 tyres - kept a spare rear set as wets - though the control 'van' tyres give *&+@*% - all grip even in the dry!

You certainly learn all about car control!!!!

Caterham support each race and will repair the car FOC except parts - they always got everyone out last season despite some major shunts in qualifying.

In summary, I felt the experience was priceless and my only regret is not doing it sooner!!

If you need any help give me a shout.

Cheers

Fergus

Top lurking Fergus, and thanks for the first-hand perspective!

So £9k for a season's racing, ignoring the cost of the trailer.

It can be a lot cheaper - enter the mag 7s with other 31 on the grid in a snd hand caterham accadamy car for say 12k , trailer 1k , all the kit from demon tweeks for 1k , ards at a school for 500 quid all in , hotls , fuel and 5 40 min races say 2k and sell the car and traler for 11k after the season - its that easy . You still have the kit and its cost you 5k plus crash damage ! Not that the 26k is not a good price but its easy to do it your self . We do and many of our friends do .All in its around a 1000 pounds an event - the accadamy is great but do you want to hill climb and race ?biggrin

I'm famous! That's me in the yellow car - middle picture biggrin

You'll never do the Academy for £5k, but it doesn't make it any less fun! I spent £2,700 on extras (paint, seats, starter button, lowered floor, removable steering wheel, doors, roof). You don't need paint (save £800ish). You don't need seats (£540, but I got most of that back when I sold them). Doors are good when it's wet, or if you're using it on the road. Roof is pointless, apart from if you actually intend to use it on the road - most don't (even if they thought they would). You will want the other bits.

Building it is fun, if a little frustrating at times. Caterham will do that for you, but I think it's another £3k. It may help resale slightly. But the whole point is that you keep racing into year 2 (and 3), with the same car.

Anyway, we'll be seeing you at Rokcingham and Brands!

See you at the Seminar then Riggers!

I'm in Group 1 next year. It is cheapish in terms of Motorsport, and especially for a one make series in fairly quick cars with good media coverage. The £18k doesn't quite tell the whole story, but it's not far off. It'll be more like £19-20k when you've added the sensible options, and getting the thing on the road and insured will be another £1-2k. If you have even a basic understanding of how a car goes together though (which you will after building it!) there's no need to pay anyone to race prep it for you (and teams are infact banned at race weekends) so actual season costs are minimal. I reckon at the end of it all, the true cost of the season, taking into account the depreciation o. Thr car value and the various consumables, you're looking at £5-7k for the season, which really isn't bad.

So I say go for it. Sign up for '11!

Sorry LHD - the closest we get is a sprint at Aintree...

Inevitably you can do it for less - it just depends on
1. How much time/skills you have
2. If you are prepared to use a tent verses a hotel
3. If you are prepared to risk not insuring the car for the races
4. Parr the spec down and not use the car on the road
5. Avoid challenging anyone in a 50/50 dice for position - why race?

My figures are based on the fact I don't have the time to build/service/set-up and wanted use the car on the road.

Equally, unless you have the talent of LH/JB you will need to practice/test.

Jezza has a point - in year two you spend 1.5K upgrading the car for RSB and get another seasons racing!!

Either way Caterham racing, be it Academy, RSB or Grads etc is great fun!!!!

Mag 7's is great but honestly nowhere near as competative as the 'official' series due to the variey of power outputs and driver ability.

And Riggers, good to meet you at Oulton, see....you do fit.

Good news folks.
After a year's absence, the first round of the 2010 Championship will be a sprint at the historic Aintree circuit. (Aintree is where Stirling Moss won his first Grand Prix, & you'll be driving on part of the same track).
It's the perfect venue for the series' first event, Liverpool Motor Club are fantastic hosts, their instructor even walks the course with you to points out all the turning points etc!

Though the Circuit only has 3 corners, is quite technical and a brilliant place to learn how your car handles in competition. On past experience, there'll be plenty of runs at the course too, they do two practice runs followed by at least 3 timed runs, often more.

Don't miss it, April 24th 2010!

Tons of free parking for PH followers & its usually only a fiver to get in.

They do, but with the added rules that drivers must pit every 2 laps for a pint of Beer, chips and a fag
