BP Ultimate trouble?

Is BP Ultimate not 97R rather than 99? This could explain the rough running of some of the cars mentioned above.

It doesn't get on with the cerbera, makes it cough and underperform, have had to use octane boost with it to bring it to what i get from Vpower or Tesco 99. IwWould rather use standard unleaded as it is somehow more suited than BP Ultimate.

Interesting to see how they use the same name for different fuels in different countries - down here BP Ultimate is 98RON and performs far better than V-power which is only 95.

I own a Xsara VTS and a C2 VTS as my work car,they both dont like Tesco 99 and just because of what depot i will be working from my petrol choice varies,i normally use V-power,Esso 97 or Total Excellium but recently as i am near a BP station i have been using ultimate in the C2 and it is running noticably better.I remember seeing a test in a mag where ultimate gave the best power increase.I guess some of it may be down to the standards of individual filling stations.

If your car is mapped for 99RON fuel wtf are you doing using 97RON fuel?

Of course it's going to run badly.

Anyone remember Formula Shell?

Never had a problem with BP personally or V- power but car feels a bit flat with Tesco 99
All 3 of them seemed to do ok in the proper mag tests I've seen.
Maybe the refineries are better round here

What about the other way round?

Whilst feeling flush one day i went for a tank of tesco 99 momentum fuel in my 172 clio. Expecting to see even more of a difference than between regular and super at my local garage. All i got were flashing emissions lights and a drop in mpg figures.

Never used that fuel since and never had the problem.

if your car has been designed to be used on 97r then that's what you should use

I use Ultimate pretty frequently in my MapTun'ed Saab 9-3 Aero. Not had any problems. Like many another cars, Saab's Trionic (7 in my case) ECUs adjust to suit what you put in and will run on a range of RON. As my car is tuned, I stick to 97RON up but haven't had problems with different brands.

A man that speaks sense. I had my ecu remapped and was told to use v-power. He did however say it will run fine as the ecu will compensate for the lower grade fuel if i stuck 95 i it. And this has been true so far.

I run a Mk1 Focus RS running somewhere over 300bhp. I usually fill up with V-power but the closest station to me closed down leaving the next closest a BP about 16 miles away. I've filled up with Ultimate many times but on one occasion after filling up about a mile down the road I felt the car missfire, whe it came up on boost it missed really badly and generally ran like a dog. I was off to a car show so carried on but the missfire and poor running carried on. All I did was run the tank until very low and then stuck some V-power in, as soon as I did it started to run better so used that up then re-filled again with V-power. I contacted the garage but they refused to accept it was a problem with their fuel as they said no-one else had reported an issue. I contacted BP customer service but as a fuel sample was now not available they said they couldnt do much about it either. I have absolutely no doubt the fuel was at fault.

It's problems like the serious misfiring on boost I'm taking about rather than the minutely detectable gains. It doesn't make a great deal of diference running an m3 or similar on 95 octane for a tank (as you have to sometimes out in the sticks). Even pretty serious cars. I'm actually talking about bad fuel, it seems I'm not alone!

On the other argument I still use vpower/99ron, whatever gains there may or may not be its not worth quibbling over for 1-2% more.. petrol prices are so silly now compared to when I used to be able to drive 150miles on £5 (only 10years ago) I try not to think about it.
