Don't worry, I think Parkers have it wrong and instead of a rather 389, you'll actually get 408bhp in a '91 car.

The thing is, along with the W124 Merc, the E39 has such a huge financial demographic which it appeals to. There are people buying them at £500 as stters, while other people are still willing to pay good money for them as an alternative to a modern BMW. A well appointed 530i Sport is a perticularly fine thing indeed. If you won the lottery and wanted a smoker for dull, day to day stuff, is there really anything out there that you'd buy instead. The E60 isn't as nicely made and the new F10 is actually bigger than my house. Mercs don't offer the same balance of handling, Audis don't do anything for me and a Masserati is pointless when you want something nice an incognito. If you want to show off, you'll head out in the 458 etc.

A spot on E39 is worth having. I personally wouldn't go with that purple on though, I've seen lower mileage cars about

Been around a while, I reckon it's because it's in the shed section. Easily worth a phone call/viewing if you're near.

Does anybody else have all logic and sense go out of the window when they find a car with 12 cylinders within their budget?

It feels like I could answer any and every question with 'But Its a V12'.

No mention of history and been up for a long time suggests borkism. But I'd be tempted to make a call, as you never know....

The only options fitted to that are Automatic Transmission, CD Changer and Cream Beige Dakota Leather.

Good news though is that the Low OBC is pixel disease free!

You are right in theory.

My only issue is that if you pay such strong money for a car then it's a keeper. Enjoy it, look after it and drive it until it blows up.
Exactly. Like Fox, I appreciate that they've not built E39s for some time. But I could happily skip a generation and obtain the best example of one I could to keep for 8-10 years hence until I could pick up an F10 with which to replace it.

Doing so does mean ignoring 90% of examples out there so will mean paying a premium compared to those.

It's one I'd be happy to justify to myself and £2k over 8-10 years could easily be swallowed up by maintaining a more cheaply bought example.

A 3.0 Sport auto on M Paras and in that gorgeous a combination, late £5s-6k seems fair. The last I had similar was a Y plate with 46k miles and FBMWSH in early 2010. It went for £7,300.

Except my own bent lies more in the Seven Series than the Five (M5 aside), so substitute a skip from a late, great E38 to F01 and the same reasoning applies. I've been looking for that elusive thing since 2009 and have accepted that one I actually will want to keep is going to be £6-8k, rather than the £3-4k I'd like it to be. I know I can buy a cheaper one and the difference will pay for my mechanic's holidays, but I'm just not that altruistic.

For buying and running for months, then yes I'll take punts on cheapies, having done both in the past. Ultimately I've derived greatest enjoyment from the dear, but top condition ones. One may be twice the price of the other - but it's relative; we're just talking about paying 10% of original cost rather than 5%, so both are still cheap.

Strangely unappealing to me, almost 100% down to the crap advert and photos. Actually if you look at it, seems to be in tidy shape. I'd phone and ask about SH. Owner's previous threads show he was after a specialist in Tunbridgewells a few years back. Also shows this thread http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Guessing that's the head off a 4 cylinder car, not one of the heads off the V8 in the BM?

I've never seen bootlid badges on the interior wood of an S600 either. Nasty.

Mora and cream are my favourite colours so that would justify a premium for me. Plus if the car is well looked after with good history.

I don't change cars often, I prefer to buy and keep for at least 2 years, normally 3. I would much rather have a really well looked after expensive car than a cheap tatty one.

I've bought a cheap car before and I would far rather pay more for a good one now

There is a saying about it that sums up my thoughts

Well, far be it from me to question, however I'd want to question everything about this well hung wallet rapist before I headed to bed with it. Excess badges are usually put on later in a cars life, when it's important to tell your passenger how massive your wallet is. I'd therefor want to know how long ago this car left owner 1 and how long the dealer had had it. It's probably fine but I'd want to know why it's had tap shoved onto the dash and it's being sold my someone pedelling a god awful modded Corsa

Isn't that a reverse-paraphrasing of Sir Charles Rolls's "The quality remains long after the price is forgotten", perhaps more suitably adapted to those of us buying luxury saloons at the bottom of that marketplace instead of the top hehe

I understand entirely. However even google-imaging 600 sel interior gets you one with the badging amongst a couple without which is interesting.

The tasteful and expensive addition of a later model Becker (nav?) head-unit is for a me a nicer sign than the badge is negative, especially on a one owner car.

Definately, I'm quite sure the one owner part of this deal is exactly the sort of guy who you'd buy a car from, however, looking at his other stock, he seems to have two cars, the Corsa and the RX8 which have been badly cosmetically modified. I'm just concerned how long ago the 1 owner PX'd it in for a new Benz before it was shipped off to auction, bought by this dealer and then used for a while until he's popped it up for sale. Or maybe I'm just being paranoid.

As you say, there's an image on Google, maybe early 600s had this on the dash, which Mercedes quickly removed when they found out it looked pap

You guys are reading after too much into that 600. It's got 12 cylinders under the bonnet. 12. What more justification do you need to get it bought?
