I didn't do any of that! I walked out the front door, stood in the road and set it as a start/ finish point then got in the car and went for a drive. It starts/stops recording when you drive over that point. Easy.
Wow! I'll certainly give that a try then smile

I wondered what the point of adding the gear ratio's was tbh. As I'm not looking to record the rpm's and all that jazz...

As I understand the situation, track owners are quite rightly concerned about having phones and cameras flying around the cabin on a circuit and they have mostly banned suction mounts.

I recently bought one of these

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/150668626497?ssPageName=...

Ok, it took 4 weeks to deliver as it comes all the way from HK, but I've stuck it to the windscreen and having had it checked at Goodwood last weekend on the Saywell day, the track marshals were perfectly happy and it passes as a secure iPhone mount.

Unfortunately in my excitement I then broke it and wasn't able to film any of the day - I am a plonka and it's not the fault of the goods, but the user!

Fortunately I ordered some more for other cars and I now have replacements to use on my next track day.

I also have Harry's app and did record my times (please bear in mind you are generally not allowed to time yourself on a track day and make it into an timed event, so I did it purely for my own interest wink )

What a great app and it is interesting to see how I improved during the day. I didn't input gear ratios or anything too technical, simply switched it on, please the phone between my legs and drove - my best time posted was 1:40 which bearing in mind I wasn't pushing beyond my limits or anywhere near the cars I'm pretty pleased.

here is a vid i took at castle combe on saturday using the app. this is overlayed with the standard data. this is mounted on the windscreen using the mount i made which is shown nearer the start of this thread.
this was a javelin trackday and they said suction mounts were allowed there on that day even though i thought they wernt allowed, so might be worth checking with any tdo before you go.

Oh my what an incredable app! I gave it a try round the block lastnight without setting anything, just started driving.. and all by itself it noted the start/finish point and several points to do the split timing from. A map of the 'track' was done and the lot.. I'm stunned smile

Just gotta wait for the holder to come now and I can try the video function too.

Just wait for v15 to be even more stunned.

Regarding sucker mounts. Broad generalisation follows!
Trackdays on airfields and not 'proper race circuits' allow items to be rubber sucker mounted.
Any 'proper' race circuit, that runs MSA races will not allow rubber sucker mountings.
At Brands, I have been asked with a camera mounted to a Manfrotto supermount on the roll bar to also have a tether on the camera incase it seperated from the mount!

Regarding timing. Before I started using the video option I had the phone in the glovebox, using a Dual XGPS150 to provide the GPS via blutooth to the phone. COuldn't see the phone so I couldn't be accused of timing.
Now I'm using video, I use the video view. In theory, there is timing information on the screen, but too small for me to read, plus it looks as you are videoing. I would not use any of the timing views, timer, clasic or racers, that give prominence to the timing aspect of HLT. I would think that would be viewed as timing, as it would be clearly visible to the driver.
I'm investigating mounting the iphone on the roll bar, so whatever happens, as the phone is behind me I cannot be accused of timing!

I'll be adapting any mount to fit on the rollbar behind me too. Bolted, no suction cups will be used here

I'm modifying one of these:
http://www.r-p-r.co.uk/kestrel/tripod_clamp.htm
Iphone and case fits in the mount, want to modify it so that there is no way the phone and mount part company! Alternatively, I may just zip tie it in!

Note:
With the iphone in the glovebox it will not be able to see the satelites for gps, you will need to use an external gps. I use the xgps150, it connects by bluetooth, also its 5 hz not the 1 hz of the iphone.

Not in my case. I went to Oulton Park, turned it on, stuck the phone in the glovebox and it worked absolutley fine.

Anyone tried this mount? I just bought one so will post a few pics once it arrives.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/APPLE-PHONE-DELUXE-GOLF-...

Also, I use a Q-star 1000 data logger, that works VIA GPS, and was wondering if there's any way of tying the camera footage in with the data? I'm useless when it comes to technology so please excuse my potential for stupidity.

I've not done anything special with it really :S

Here is a photo though:

Only thing i could think you might be doing is having the holder the opposite side so the camera is higher up and maybe then the mount obstructs the view?
It was me being an arse, I didn't have the mount high enough up the windscreen, cheers for your help

Just a heads up, Harry expects v15 to be in the app store today.

Hi folks,

LapTimer Standard and LapTimer Professional v15 will be available latest Thursday this week.
I had some issues getting TomTom support through the review (it is finally solved now), so it took some more days and an escalation to Apple's review board.

But everything is fine now!

I need to submit a new version of LapTimer Trainer, so this will need some more days - but should work out smoothly. In addition I will submit bug fix version v15.0.1 just after release to fix some items introduces with v15 (nothing too spectacular).

Just downloaded Pro version and cannot wait till next out at Brands to give it a try. Should be great if it's anywhere as good as it looks?!

Just had a go at video while going round the block. I used the same mount as pictured above for this test, but I want to mod it to fit on a rollbar rather than suction cup..

Anyway, it works well. The phone rattles inside the holder, but a cheap case should sort that. The app ran fine timing all laps, but it only records ever other lap. Have you found this to be the case too? The video camera symbol on the laps suggests the first and third laps have video, the middle lap has no symbol..

Mount arrived this morning and it seems ideal for roll-cage mounting if the clamp opens up wide enough? If not, it'll be gaffa tape and/or cable ties. The cradle grips the phone really tightly and the rubber backing should help stop any vibration. It certainly seems better than I was expecting for a fifteen quid ebay purchase anyway.

Clamp wasn't large enough for roll cage but easily mounted with cable ties instead. I haven't decided on exact position yet.

Interested in seeing how these mounts perform. I've tried the incar thing with my previous iPhones, and generally they didn't turn out too great. I did try recently with my 4S and it was pretty impressive.

I didn't have a mount, so I wedged it in between the seat and the head rest which kept it in place and seemed to do a good job of damping as there was no rattling from the audio after. Found it pretty difficult to get a good shooting angle doing this though, could barely see the road. More dash, and then sky.
