New BMW's getting stolen using blank BMW keys

What exactly do you expect BMW to do other than the software update? You own the car, not BMW. If you are worried about it getting stolen, be pro active and do something about it yourself. There are plenty of security devices around. Just don't expect BMW to hold your hand for the rest of the cars life.
When I bought my BMW I didn't buy it in the belief that it had 100% security. I bought it because it's a damn fine car. I have installed the latest firmware and have other methods in place. If it get's stolen now, it's tough luck. I certainly won't be blaming BMW for not watching over my car 24/7. And yes, if it did get stolen, I would buy another BMW in a heart beat.
As a minimum I'd like to at least own up to it, so that people have a chance of taking precautions. How many people know about this now other than keen types like us? The type of language used really winds me up, as I think I know a bit about what is going on I can see right through the words. When I bought my BMW I didn't buy it in the belief that it had 100% security. As for what to do. Well my car is out of warranty so I don't expect something for free, but with something as serious of this, i expect a solution, and then I can decide if I want to buy it or not. If my car was less than 3 years old I would want a fix.
Two threads on this subject running at the minute, and some advice from Max_Torque:

Listen chaps, it's easy! Just remove one of the CAN bus wires from your J1962 OBD socket. The wires push backwards out of the plastic connector by pushing down a little locking tab. Then just tape said wire back onto the loom with a bit of electrical insulating tape.
Said thief is not going to be spending time with his head upsidedown in your footwells trying to find out why his tool can get coms with your car for any length of time. If your dealler needs to communicate with the car, they can just spend a min putting the contact back into place:

Remove either pin 6 (CAN low) or 14 (CAN high)

As requested, piccy of stop lock pro on m tech steering wheel ( with ambrosia ready mix custard because lifes to short for powder!!):

hope this helps..
edited to add: its snug where the prongs loop around the wheel rim and go back in to the lock, but its not going to mark the wheel - biggest pain is forgetting to remove it before getting in and whacking your hip on it as you sit down!

Dear All, I have recently had my 1M stolen. You may have seen the link on 1 addicts:
http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=66...
I have amazing CCTV footage of the theft which will be posted shortly once the Police have finished with it. Can I ask anyone who has had their car stolen in the same way to please PM me. I have a friend at the BBC who is interested in this story, but without evidence or people to back me up, I wont have a leg to stand on.
OP neil have tried emailing you but you wont accept emails, very interested in hearing from you specifically seeing as you're local to me.
Thanks

Stolen1M - it would be worth viewing and contacting some of the BMW owners here, many of whom had their cars stolen without keys or broken windows...

First post, but long time lurker & BMW owner (until someone steals it). Here's the response I got when I asked them if the latest software upgrade addresses the issue :
Dear WheresMyCar
Thank you for your online enquiry dated April 19, 2012.
All BMW vehicles are tested and comply with the security regulation in the UK and it is disappointing that on occasions, these have been overcome by a criminal. BMW are ever advancing the security on our vehicle range to keep up with the new ways that car thieves come up with to commit their crime. Your local BMW Approved Dealership may be able to assist you further, they will be able to provide you with details and costs of any software upgrades that are available for your vehicle.
I would like to note that we liaise with police forces and insurance companies throughout the UK and should they be of the opinion that BMW UK has a responsibility for a particular incident, they would contact us directly to request that we review our product.
I trust that this answers your enquiry, however, please do not hesitate to contact me, should you require any further assistance.
Yours sincerely
BMW UK

No help what so ever, and pretty shocking that they think I'd pay for a software upgrade on a 10 month old car to fix a problem of their making!

I got pretty much the same reply from the same person. Obviously just a copy and paste job! Dear WheresMyCar

I just wrote to BMW about my stolen vehicle, and probably will receive the same "blurb" with no real world help whatsoever.
I am still hopeful that someone in charge will finally set up an effective solution. Now I am hoping for a decent discount on a F serie... delivered quickly… help!

The earlier poster referring to the software upgrade addressing this is talking nonsense IMO. It would have come out by now.
I think its obvious that this isnt a software problem that can be fixed with an upgrade, if this was the case BMW would be telling its customers to upgrade, whether this is a free upgrade or they charge for it.
A number of 2012 BMW's have been stolen over the past couple of weeks, so talk of new software stopping thefts is nonsense.
I think its a design fault that cant be fixed with a simple bit of software, i'm sure the next generarion of BMW's wont use the same type of electronic key that can be copied so easily, but that is years away.

Has anyone tried the OBD port modification yet? Just wondering if it's a ten-minute job or are we talking hours? I'd like a tidier solution obviously, but in the meantime I'd be happier if I could disable the OBD port.
ten minute job, but I would definitely reconnect it before you take the car in for service etc., or you may get blamed for the "computer says no" momentGassing Station | BMW General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
