Some people are taking this way too seriously. Anecdotal snippets of Brewer are hardly going to form a sufficient appraisal of his character, either.

Brewer is the stooge to Ed's straight-man. The concept of the show wouldn't really work unless there was some form of 'friction' between the two.

I think the likes of Ed (and James May) are brilliant. Asides from being patently enthusiastic about the topic of cars, they can convey knowledge in a way that makes you want to see and learn more and even try stuff for yourself. That can only be a good thing.

Regardless of the format or how contrived the sales picthes are, it's escapism which mitigates the inherent nerdy nature of diagnosing and fixing problems on cars that, let's be honest, even a lot of people who like driving couldn't care less about.

Enjoy the show for what it is becuase there's certainly not enough of them.

I've bought from Mike too, I found him to be a nice chap.

Oh wait, no I haven't.

My point... Saying on the internet that you've done something doesnt make it true.

will you also suggest that I posted the above 4 years ago just incase some cretin ever challenged me on it?

He had a garage in Merton in 1996, corner unit with a white, badly painted fascia.

If you ever meet him ask him about it.

I like him and really like the show, I think all it needs to improve is a bit of variety in the banter. All cars behave in the same basic way and are judged on the same basic factors (why motor journalisim is so reptitive)so if you are buying and reviewing similar road cars of similar age every episode then its going to be repetitive banter, its better when they travel a bit for the cars and have some craic along the way.

I have worked in TV and I know that he is probably doing the deal for real then asking the other party to reinact the deal for the camera so it always looks gash after 3 or 4 takes with an uninterested non personality, and probably also some director telling him to change his words slightly each time so they are totally uninterested in making it believable.

Mike if youre reading this, try and expand your part of the show a bit to include the trip to xxx to check out the car and make it a part of the show that changes every episode. I like the fact Ed is now really doing his work as a demonstration to teh viewer rather than getting the job done, learning a new skill is one of the key draws of the show for petrolheads.

I met Mike & Edd at the NEC classic motor show a couple of years ago - both very nice blokes, total car enthusiasts and only too happy to spend time talking to people.

Bloody Hell - it's a TV show, innit?

Brewer isn't like that in real life, is he? As people have said, he's a very clued-up petrolhead like most of us on here. When he plays the fool and acts all ignorant about car mechanics with Ed, they're both acting out a well - scripted role, in a TV show that's cut, edited and produced to make an interesting show with a bit of pace and fun.

Mike and Ed are basically actors. To my mind, if Mike's TV persona is making people comment and discuss it so much - then he's doing a great job in acting out that role well enough that some people actually believe what they see on TV as real life!

Like Top Gear - some people are confusing acting, a script and clever editing with reality. But because Wheeler Dealers is a car show that is based around a bit of fact, they don't see the distinction.

But actually it's no better than pouring out vitriol aimed at characters in East Enders or Corrie - but as they're fiction, you're unlikely to say you hate one of the actors becasue of the role they play in a soap, are you?

But it amounts to the same thing.

For the record, I love WD and Top Gear - there aren't many shows about cars around, so we should be happy for them, and accept that they're not real and accurate reflections of real life. Just a bit of fun and entertainment that happen to feature our love - cars - as their subject matter.

Can we give poor Mike a break now please? biggrin

I find that turning on Discovery and finding an unseen episode of Wheeler Dealers is one of life's small victories, an hour (minus 20 mins of adverts for accident lawyers) of real car stuff, not some ponce reviewing something you will probably never be able to afford or some tedious ste about Korean hatchbacks, they buy and fettle actual examples of cars you can afford and may actually want to own, it is Pistonheads heartland car wise and they dont buy them only to "hillariously" wreck them or let a mental Indian chap lose with a grinder on them, you get to see them issues dealt with, in a decent but not tiresome, level of detail.

I can sort of see how Mike may grate a little on those with a sensitive disposition but I quite like the cockney wide boy patter, Edd is like a middle aged 19 year old car nutjob, he is a legend.

I think Wheeler Dealers has come of age a bit and improved, gone from an also ran to one of the better car programmes, for anyone buying a specific model, there being an episode to cover it is a bonus, definitely worth watching.

J4CKO, I cannot agree more. One of the best posts I've read in ages.

My three and six year olds are now planning on getting me up at 6 to watch the discovery turbo extravaganza, start them early I say.

I enjoy the repeats on Turbo the best. It just so happens that 1900hrs is our youngest's bedtime bottle time so I am forced to sit on the comfy sofa and give him his bottle whilst watching WD. Very nice little routine we have going!
