Gearbox problems
Discussion
Had a problem over the past couple of days with difficulty engaging 1st and reverse. Then yesterday when I drop it into second before i lift the clutch pedal back up I get a horrible sound like gears are crunching.
Once clutch pedal is back up it drives fine but it sounds horrible for that few seconds before gear is engaged.
Spoke with roger at monkfish and he says its sounds like spigot bearing has gone which has now knackered the gearbox.
Anyone else had this or know the best / cheapest place to source a new box if needed?
Thanks in advance

Shock horror. Another gearbox problem. So much for the so called bullet-proof GM drivetrain. If these problems were as prevalent on one of the more mainstream Vauxhalls, there would be uproar.
OP, Roger is no stranger to the situation and would probably be as well placed as anyone to advise you. He can rebuild them very nicely from what those who have had them done have said, but he may have a waiting list.

Just wondering, how's the clutch fluid looking?
I had a similar issue engaging gears and flushed the clutch with new fluid as per this article:

Solved the problem 100%

I had the exact same problem over Christmas. Took the box out, removed what was left of the spigot bearing and replaced it. I was lucky and had no play on the input shaft. Re-fitted it all and its been fine for the 2000miles i done since then.

Where did you get the replacement spigot bearing from?

Can source one for £2800 the T56 TUET2066 but the same company supply a TR6060 TUET10310 for £1500 which they say is direct replacement for vxr8. Does anyone know if this will fit a 6.0 monaro vxr?
No, it doesn't. the costs of doing so would far exceed the difference in cost to a new standard box.
Exactly which bearing does the Monaro use ?
It seems odd that is is a very common problem on a Monaro platform, but the likes of the Camaro, Vette etc it's a rare problem.
Where exactly are the differences ?
Strictly speaking, the spigot bearing does no work whatsoever until your foot is on the clutch and there is a difference in rotating speed between the crank and input shaft. At all other times they are effectively locked together.

Im hoping to be as lucky as you with mine which is displaying the same problem.James

IIRC The monaro bearing is not sealed (the input shaft acts as the inner race) vs the VXR8/CTSV/Camaro etc which run an updated sealed full bearing.
Depending on circumstance I can see this causing the bearing to dry out, rust, get full of cr*p etc very easily.

this ^^^^
Basically, they dry out. The needles seize, ruin the end of the input shaft. Input shaft is then no longer supported correctly, with the consequence of internal gearbox damage.

No Vulgar, yours will just need an oil and filter, because according to you a few months ago when some of us were apparently talking nonsense and must have just been spending money for fun, that's all these cars ever need.

Assume it was a self-lubricating variety...
ked too & the spigot wasn't the cause of that failure either
