Now brace yourself Loon, but I was even saying to wifey, that as much as I love my classics, I think to do Europe properly these days, I want all my mod cons. Needs to be a modernish heavy bruiser. The inherent reliability is also a welcome bonus when you know you are hauling 1000+ miles.
Agreed.
For a family on travels I agree.

For me, alone, I would go for something more adventurous.

£10k by 2013??

Thoroughly scary proposition. Can you imagine how rapey a bad one could be?
I sincerely hope so, I plan to buy an ///M car the day I'm 21 I think an E39 M5 will be first up.

I might be wrong but I think to stay in the race only the driver is allowed to do anything to the car to get it back to the pits? (think the marshals can help get you out of harms way of course!)

Does anyone have any experience of GAP insurance and who is a good supplier?

Mother has decided on a new Fiesta today and was quoted £350 for finance gap (Borrowing £5-6k) but a quick google throws up c£150 maximum for RTI gap.

Who quoted the £1200?

Contact Stack direct, as far as I'm aware they're the only people that will fix them (properly).

A comment not without validity. My father put the A he was given for his 21st bday into a stone wall passing through St Michaels in Lancs when he was "pressing on". This is also the man who put the Boxster into a bollard in a car park in Germany after picking it up from Stuttgart. I dont think the power matters so much as the numpty...

I also didn't think any E39s came with ISOFIX seats or the option thereof. Spec changes to the M5 were minimal throughout its life:

BMW M Registry said:
What changes were made to the E39 M5 during the time that it was produced?

Though there were no major mechanical alterations to the E39 M5 during its entire production run, there were a number of equipment alterations that appeared with the 2001 model-year M5 (from 9/00 production). These include:

  • Revised headlight design incorporating illuminated "Corona" rings
  • Revised tallight design
  • Park Distance Control sensors in the front bumper (previously in rear only)
  • Thicker three-spoke M steering wheel identical to the one fitted to the E46 M3
  • Grey instrument faces
  • Solar sensor for standard automatic climate control
  • Revised navigation/audio unit with larger (6.5-inch) monitor
  • Rear head protection airbags added
  • Second-generation M Mobility tire repair system in place of earlier version
  • Available M Audio System with special tweeters, Kevlar/carbon coaxial speakers and two subwoofers behind the rear console
  • Alcantara headliner included with Extended Leather interior (previously only included with Complete Leather)
For the subsequent two model years, changes were limited to the addition of new exterior colors (from 9/01 production) and the upgrade to a DVD-based navigation system (from 9/02 production).
However, ISOFIX seems to have appeared across the E39 range for the final (2003) model year of production, which will be cars with a build date of around August 2002 or later:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_5_Series_(E39)

Wiki said:
2003 marked the last year for the E39 platform; they were differentiated by the addition of extra chrome trim on the trunk (boot) and on the sides of the body. In all 6-cylinder model 5-Series add a standard sunroof. The optional navigation systems upgraded from CD-ROM format (8 CDs to cover the entire USA and Canada) to a single DVD-ROM. The optional sport package on the 540i carried parts from M-technic. This included a full M-tech ground effects, M-tech II suspension, 18 inch wheels, and a variety of M badging.Isofix/LATCH child seat anchors were added. The E39 estate (touring) was continued into 2004 until the touring version of the new E60 5 Series was released.
So as a 1 March 2003- registered example, it should have factory ISOFIX it seems.
