Why did you bother driving that one of you don't want to spend that much money? From looking at the other ones, that looks like the best one, and ok, it's not a V8, but still a great engine and half decent economy. Why not make a cheeky offer?

Personally I don't think it is worth the asking price, but if you had been looking for a manual E34 with a bigger engine and sports seats for a while in fairly original condition, not many have come up for sale.

Emeye, I sold my nice but not perfect M reg 525i Auto with cloth, for £1200 earlier this year, took 3-4 weeks to find a buyer, how much did yours go for? I would think V8, manual and leather is worth a bit more?

That's good news as I've not sold mine yet. I have been so busy I've not had chance to take any pics and get it up for sale.

I have a feeling that E34's are at the stage where the asking price can be in two distinct brackets, sub £1000 equals perception of a bargain basement shed but £1500 and above is more "modern appreciating classic", in certain circumstances the same car could be at both ends of the price spectrum and find a happy buyer, it's just how you the seller see the car and market it. Unlike E39's which will also probably follow the trajectory of the older 5ers and are currently on a fixed downward path, the E34 is probably going up in price like E28's have done. Pure Sunday morning guesswork of course but the best I can come up with when it comes to the wide variation in asking price of E34's and W124's etc.

I have been wondering where to pitch the car, as it is very nice, but has some small cosmetic marks - nothing serious, but this may put off the "modern appreciating classic" crowd. All I can do is get it up for sale and see what happens - what it sells for will probably come down to how long the in-laws will put up with it being on their drive!

I think good condition cars with unusual specs will start to command a decent premium now E28s have jumped massively.


A white car with no bodykit, black sport leather, tech 2 wheel and a manual box means I wouldn't see any issue with paying £500-700 more than a car without that spec. It's still a tiny amount for such a lot of car.

If the provenance stacks up I suppose that one has a chance with the mileage being low, but £3500 does seem right up there. It only takes one buyer though to make that price justified, as Woody mentioned, the E28 levels seem to be firmly there now.

As I said previously I have a target budget of 2500ish, but wasn't sure until viewing / driving some what I want and what that money can get, I'm flexible and would willing to entertain either a 'ropier' earlier 528/35/40, or a really tidy late 530/40, but without having looked at them I wasn't sure. I am considering an offer on this but want to check out the 540 touring up midlands way first. Still may also try an s-type as the 5's felt a bit german, not as light steering and relatively supple sportesque ride as I was hoping for /expecting

I suppose it sets a benchmark, but the problem is that all the cheaper ones may disappoint you! One thing worth checking for on the e39s is rust around the rear, on the saloon have a mosey between the gap where the rear bumper pushes up against the body work.

Your post listed a bunch of cheap nails and a really rather tidy sensible mileage example. Buy the nice one, if you cant afford it then frankly you can't afford the shonky V8's either.

Infact £3495 for an 80k Sport Touring Auto with Nav is so reasonable I'd trying to find out why

3495 asking is a very good price indeed. I paid that after negotiation on a 100k miler. In summary - go for that one.

It's not about the cost of it, I could easily afford to buy/run any of them, and pay for a mint late model or M5 money if I wanted to. But i'd rather not, I am not so drawn to one that I WANT to at the moment - and I don't want a nail as it'll be a third addition to the fleet (one being a work-in-progress track car, so i'd rather not have to pre-assign a load of time/money to running a sheddy E39). Nice car for covering the miles and will still try find a good one that I want to pay for...
