Well i thought it time for an update:

The porsche has been in near daily use throughout the winter, not putting a foot wrong and seems to be running better than ever, just ticking over to 80,500 miles leaving me 3,200 miles to go to keep within the insurance limit - November....this may be close!

The little red car has helped me move in (and out) of a rented flat and has coped with everything I've asked it to do (barring carrying rear seat passengers - double amputees required, bedroom activities were also rejected due to space or lack of frown ). i still haven't got around to making the improvements that it likely needs, although this car still gets looks....twice now little children have stopped and pointed at the car when I stop to let them cross the road - not bat for a little old Porsche.

Current Faults:

Roof leaks onto passenger sometimes
Radio Cuts out and wont turn on for a few hours/days - loose power cable i think
Speakers sometimes don't work on NS and have nothing but treble
Torn seats & cracked dash
Trim above now raised as per below pic's
Gearbox whine
Bent Jack - don't lend it to anybody in their time of need frown

Good Bits:

Engine is perfect - full pressure never drops
bodywork - no rust anywhere and scrubs up nicely (except where a tw*t scraped the bumper insert at the station last month frown )

The next jobs are a service (when I can get some second hand axle stands) and to glue down the loose trim & fix the roof......)

So some pictures:

Snow:

Dirty winter backside:

After an Easter clean - she scrubs up nicely!

Bumper Scuff

Steel 924 jacks are worth nowt, but a nice alloy late jack can be bought for a tenner: lovely.

Brilliant, thanks for that. I'll try and source one ASAP - what do you think would work best for sticking down the loose trim above the windscreen? - Araldite?

Torq axle stands are only £15 a pair at B&Q. I've used them on three cars including an axle swap on a B5 Audi A4 and a friend used them plenty on his e30 when he was protecting the underside.

Neither of us have been killed once. Still don't like crawling under mind you

Love the car btw, tempted by one but parts prices would put me off with a year of uni still to do.

Thanks for that, I may have to order some.

I dont think the parts prices are too bad, they share a fair few parts with VAG cars of the era and there are plenty being broken - I'll try and source from specialised breakers or the owners club if i ever need a part.

Saying that I am used to BMW prices, M-sprt bumpers all injectors and HPFP's at £1k++++ and thats not to mention bumpers etc....

Is the aluminium trim coming away because the steel pegs on the body have corroded away? Without a doubt the best thing to do is re-attach it in the way that was intended because everything else is a bodge and wont last.

Id be looking for a replacement used flush fitting screen, which looks far smarter.

I dont think that the 924S, or even the 924 for that matter, share more than a few small trim parts with VAG cars, unfortunately... Its a very obscure list: window winding handles, courtesy light, late plastic type Golf Mk1 switchgear , Golf Mk1 steel wishbone etc. The rear swinging arm is similar in design but not the same as that off a Super Beetle, but its alloy on the 924S and the front struts are originally Super Beetle pattern, but with completely different valving.......

Indeed that looks to be the cause. I think I'll need to investigate this as when I get a minute.

How would i gain access? - behind the headlining or would the windscreen have to come out?

So as an update, there isn't much of one, barring ticking over 81,600 miles...but a few issues which will need my attention soon....

The radio - there seems to be a shorting power wire, It will work and then cut out (presumed when touches something) so I think I'll need to give that a look see

and.....far more importantly...

The engine sounds really tappety, especially when starting up, but only badly for a second or 2 (as the oil pressure gague delays rising after starting) but can't be too healthy. After this it drops back down to normal? - but still slightly off.

It is due a service and oil change (I'll do it myself one weekend soon) but was wondering what the likely cause of the second problem is?

Oh it also ticks from the left suspension when cornering and the steering clunks but they don't seem too bad (will be taken off the road over winter for some fettling anyway smile )

The clunks and knocks are probably worn bushes, most are easy to change and may be cheapest from a Porsche dealer (they will post to you if you aren't close to one)
The Anti-roll bars have a habit of breaking the end drop-links, which can make some strange noises but again are easy to change, here is my mechanic (aged 8 at the time) sorting mine out on my old 944T:

Come on Mark - you know how friendly I am!

I joined the forum in 2011 when I was looking for a 931. Admittedly its my weakest model, but I know enough to be able to offer something and I was looking forward to being about to find out about the stuff I didn't know.

I found one or two members to be decent (Id add Felix to that too, as he has since joined and taken a principal role), but on the whole, the opposite was true.

I think that the whole club fell to pieces shortly afterwards, with several 'real' 924 owners clubs springing up and lots of spamming here.
