Was talking to Leeds OPC and this came up in conversation, its just the light as I understand it rather than an issue with the brake and a recall is in operation. There does seem to be an issue with the instrument cluster as mine is saying it needs a service at coming up to 12 months old, and it does not, another instrument issue.
I had the parking brake failure once a while back but never since. Also mine has just come up saying it needs a service and I thought it was at 20k miles or so. Does it definitely not need one?

My horrible electric parking brake is an utter and complete failure at all times!

I'd happily spend £000's on a manual handbrake conversion.
I've got used to it and don't really have a problem any more, what particularly bugs you?

It's a bigger issue with manual transmission (like mine) than the PDK cars where drivers can sit with one foot on each pedal. My issues include,

  • Have to lean forward to apply it
  • Have to lean forward to release it
  • Doesn't release quickly enough - can stall the engine
  • "All or nothing" application
All in all I consider it a substantial backward step.

I also have a manual, I see what you mean about the leaning forward (bit of a faff) but for my seating position it's not miles away. I think i've finally got used to the angles which hill hold auto engages (or not)and this combined with releasing the handbrake via clutch-throttle manipulation seems to do for most situations. That all said for most of my driving it doesn't get that much use and I find myself sitting on the brake rather than engaging the handbrake in most semi-flat situations..

I think when hill hold works it is a great system but for the times in-between it definitely is a bit of a hassle

Absolutely agree this is the preferred driving style with these cars. As you say, the hill hold seems to have trouble spotting hills!

One thing that would be useful is a hill hold button within easy reach....

I also spotted the inability for the hill gold to spot small ones.. I have a pdk so it's more an issue.. But it's definitely on the stupid side of things. I had a R56 Mini Cooper s with proper handbrake and the hill hold I think never failed me once.

This one with idiotic knee manual pull/push system half of the time doesn't work..

And it's a 991 btw.. Guess all the same?

That's what I was told, but I'd suggest calling to confirm, that way if it turns out they're wrong you've covered yourself from a warranty perspective.

Thanks for the advice, I will ignore the warning light but if it persists
will take it to OPC. (car is 9 month old with 1300 miles on the clock)
The service warning - I had that after a few hundred miles, OPC just reprogrammed it saying it was a default setting at the factory that had not been reset.

you can just drive off as it has auto release .. your seat belt must be on though.

Except it doesn't release quick enough and there's a real risk of stalling the car if you attempt to move off swiftly.

That's really nice mhh! biggrin

Mine has just landed in Blighty - so with any luck it'll be with the OPC chaps on Saturday - and leave enough time to do what they need to do before I collect on Friday am.

I know it's "only" a Boxster - but because it's brand spanking new - I am genuinely more excited than when I was waiting to collect my GT3! bounce
- Perhaps this is because I: a) Ordered it 13 weeks ago and b) I've been without a Porsche for exactly 4 weeks!

My car had the parking brake light come on a couple of weeks ago - phoned the OPC who had it collected and fixed it under a recall notice ( don't know if this has been mentioned earlier as I haven't read the full thread)

My car's a manual, 3 months old and I'd never received any correspondence regarding a recall - was only told about it when I contacted the OPC to discuss the warning light ! not a very good recall !!
