Star Trek - Into Darkness "WITH SPOILERS"
Discussion
I went to see the film at the weekend and enjoyed it. One thing that surprised me was the prominent displaying of the Union Flag in the scenes set in London. I'm no ST expert but I always thought it was set in a united Earth where nation states had ceased to be. I can't recall ever seeing a US Stars and stripes in ST for example.
Can anyone offer an explantion?

The third movie is surely going to be about Klingons.
I certainly hope so, as mentioned in my previous post we haven't really seen a decent big space battle in the new ones yet which is rather disappointing considering that it's usually one of the staples of the series and the technology is now there to do this some proper justice. They had the perfect opportunity in this one to pitch the Enterprise against the new ship but seemed to bottle it for some strange reason. Here's hoping we get some proper large scale pew pew in the next one. The opening scene in First Contact against the Borg was brilliant so I'd love to see a full scale Klingon vs Federation tear up.

However I do also enjoy the silence approach although they do seem to use quite a bit of artistic licence when choosing when and when not to have sound effects (the Enterprises phazers still make noise for instance)

And they did pitch the enterprise against the new ship. The enterprise got its butt comprehensively kicked
I love seeing whoever the captain might be at the time using their intelligence and ingenuity to kick the crap out of whoever is trying it on and "Fire the phazer\photon torpedoes" is probably one of the best and most used phrases in the franchise. Just disappointing that in abouut 4 hours of Star Trek goodness in the new films we've had barely a couple of minutes of the Enterprise kicking arse.

Here's the biggest plot disaster for future films...
They've effectively now found the cure for death
They actually have (limited) ability to cure death in the original timeline - at least they do by the TNG-era so I'm sure they can cope. They've effectively now found the cure for death

Unfortunately I think the real reason the flag is shown is so that those dumb cinema-goers who are geographically challanged (i.e. mostly the Yanks) can be in no doubt that yes, this is in fact London\The UK.
Its actually something that has not been covered a lot in Trek canon, Yes the earht is a united government, but it has never been stated much if the member states still have their own flag, a bit like the USA flag and states having their own flags, like texas, arizona, California etc.
Also most of the flags you see flying are the federation flag of the blue circle with stars on against a white background. But starfleet is an organisation, the earth flag is something i dont know if we have seen on screen at any point??
Any hardcore trek folk can enlighten me?

Not sure if that comment was tongue in cheek but no, it's only an alternative timeline AFTER the events of the first movie, everything before that is the same which also includes the unification of all of earths states.
When, in Trek lore, did this unification take place? For instance, in Scott Bakula's 'Enterprise' Trek or Zephram Cochrane's First Contact Trek was the Earth unified?I don't mean the creation of 'The Federation' but the subjugation of all of the Earth's countries into one Super-state.

Under Structure, it seems that Earth retains nation state identities, ergo individual flags, just there is a United Earth Government...

Saw it last night in 2d with one of the daughters and we both thoroughly enjoyed it.
Her because it's a great stand alone block buster and me because I get all the old nods to the original series and films.
However.......
Although Benedict was a great baddie, did anyone not find him a little too white to be playing Khan Noonien Singh?
