Are Mercedes still planning on a pullman version any time soon?

Not a fan of the wood but with a few options i'm sure that can be made to look half decent.

I like the exterior aswell.

XJ-L, particularly the Ultimate is a much finer looking car, exterior and interior. Shame the Merc will still out sell it.

Given the choice I'd still pick the new Range Rover over either of these.

2 spoke wheel looks similar to the one found in a Kia Picanto.

Strange how the wheel on the KIA looks OK, but on the Merc it looks like it was fitted upside down. I was trying to figure out why that was, but dimensionally the wheels seem about the same.

The King is back!

What an epic machine.

Technological tour-de-force.

I think it's stunning - and agree, the rear is very reminiscent of the CL 216 Coupe.

Cannot wait to see one in the flesh.

Not keen on the digital dials though - prefer proper needles for the speedo and rev counter!

somehow S classes were better when they were square and plain looking - a sort of two-fingers at trendies:

It's always nice to have a sneak preview of what I'll be driving in 15 years time...

Shame someone left the back of the prototype clay model too close to a radiator, but then I've come to accept that future S-classes will never compare to the glorious W140 or W126.

I expect I'll get used to it's wrinkled droopy arse over the next decade-and-a-half, much like I got used to the googly-eyed W210 I currently slob about in, but hated when it came out in '96.
You can get used to a w210, but it's not a handsome looking car! I've had several over the years, and never once thought "this looks good".

W124, however, different kettle of fish.

So you honestly think the Accord looks more similar than Mercedes' own coupe version of the same car? Interesting. Ironically, that Honda is a handsome car too IMO.
Agreed with your CL post and this one- I quite like it. In the same way that I like the Legend, especially if it's this one... may be an insight into what the Brabus/AMG versions could look like...

As a result, what the hell is a 4 cylinder diesel doing in the engine lineup?
It's a diesel hybrid. Some people will want the low CO2/green credentials.
bks! An S Class shouldn't have less than 6 cylinders, whether it be a petrol or diesel engine.

If you're that bothered about the green credentails, buy an E200 CDI!

Dimming brake lights? Pah! the Triumph 2000 came with a night dim relay, which would dim brakelights when the lights were switched on, back in 1963!

Also I have read somewhere that cars with more than 4 cylinders are taxed very heavily in China. It would not be surprising to see 4 cylinder diesel hybrids appearing in more and more vehicles in the next few years.

The S Class is the worlds finest luxury car. The choice of those who require, at a sub Bentley level, the ultimate in luxury and are prepared to pay the not inconsiderable price in order to acheive this.
I'm sure you're right, but it does sound a bit like "M&S makes the world's finest suits for those who require, at sub-Savile Row level, the ultimate in luxury"...

I like it. However I find the screen on the dash seems to fit a little too awkwardly, especially with the nice sweeping design underneath.

I think it looks rather nice actually. Like someone else pointed out it's like they've evolved the current CL into a saloon format. The instrument binacle takes a bit of getting used to but the general interior design is very nice. I'm sure it won't be long before lowlier cars start getting large displays in a similar fashion. I'm reliably informed that the responsiveness, framerate and resolution of the new system is just on another level compared to anything else out there. It'll make the systems in the Jag look seriously out of date.

It seems like the "done thing" is to utterly pan a significant car lauch these days.

I'll have an S500 in my lottery garage to keep the C63 company.

I had it on my Triumph Dolomite - a Night dimming relay that reduced the voltage to the brake lights when the headlights were on. Subsequently removed from production because the lights were stupidly dim anyway. I agree it should have made its way back into production; either that or PEOPLE SHOULD LEARN TO USE THEIR fkING HANDBRAKE AT TRAFFIC LIGHTS.

Ahem.
Durrrr

1/ Welcome to 2013 !

2/ Such cars have automatic gearboxes and it is quite normal to stop at traffic lights and keep the brakes on unless you want to creep into the car in front ...

3/ Stop start tech. also means squeezing the brake pedal at traffic lights, junctions etc. to activate it even on a car with a manual 'box.

I like it quite a lot and glad to hear they have improved interior quality the current and previous generations felt a bit low rent compared to the W140 IMO.

well, i have to say that is truly awful.. i loved the current version until they changed the rear lights - i thought the colour strip through the lights looked really good.

IMHO Mercedes seem to have some teenager working on rear light clusters and dashboards at the moment, - i would go as far as saying the dashboard guy is a teenager from america who they picked up cheap from the chrysler de-merger - no real look of quality at all.

This dashboard just looks like a slab of plastic fake wood bolted in (just like the last cls looked when specced in cheap wood finish)

As much as it hurts me to say it - as a Merc driver for a long time - I would struggle to buy one of the current crop - I am veering towards the dreaded Audi !
