Correction: I've lost about £8k over 12 years on my Civic but still going strong......,quote=sc4589]

Challenge accepted. My dad's lost around £8k over 10 years on his Civic, and if/when mine explodes, I'll be able to sell all the trinkets for more than I paid for them and get all my money back... ready to buy another stupid 'bargain'. hehe

The danger of 124's is of falling in love with them

You'll either:
a) service it, change the front ball joints and just drive and clean it revelling in it's over engineered fantasticness
or
b) go mental OCD and virtually rebuild the thing to be perfect

You won't know which way you'll go at first.
Oh dear. My w124 is back in on Monday for entirely unnecessary work.

Autocar has a cover that's in the spirit of this thread this week:

Probably because the journalists involved are reading the ridiculous value for money that many of the cars presented on here for consideration represent. And realising what a good news story for hard pressed motorists this is! I really believe that this thread is head and shoulders better on finding and detailing bargains than any of the offerings in the co called professional press in the UK. Quite exceptional. The "professionals" are taking a leaf out of PH'ers best thread and calling it their own. Unsurprisingly!
bad news is the bargins are going to get pricier

Damn. It looked like a mighty cheap entrance to the 5-cylinder club. Even if it is shagged, surely you'd get your money back from cashing in the remaining tax, pulling off a few bits and then scrapping the rest..?

And fitting the engine to a multipla! (some bloke pulled the driveline from a 20vt coupe and stuck it in a multipla, awesome sleeper)

Not a single droptop in the list.

Presume they're saving for a summer bargains piece, but no MX5, MGF, 3 Series, Saab 900,9.3' A4, etc seems odd.

Awful wheels and exhaust. Doesn't look too bad for £500, but I'd be very wary of this part of the description especially.

Whenever I read these magazine articles about bargain cars they ALWAYS end up being a lazy load of journalistic ste.

They have cover headlines such as "Bag a Range Rover for less than £10k", and when you read the article they post examples that they have found on Autotrader or PH Classified or wherever that you just know they have not even bothered to go and look at, and are more than likely borked to death or dodgy as hell.

Anyone can quote ads and prices from the internet, yet when you get to the end of the article, you usually find out that the car in the accompanying pictures is on sale at a main dealers for almost double the headline budget!

The articles where they actually go and look at a car for sale, such as in the back of EVO are a little better, but I always get the sneaking suspicion that these cars always conveniently tie in to used car dealers that are spending lots of money on advertising in their magazine!

I agree, it's an odd statement to make when it's got 12mths MOT. Just need to have a good look over before committing to buy.

Agree exhaust is terrible but for some strange reason I don't mind the black wheels with the green paint. You'd get most of your £500 back from breaking it.

No mention of mileage - I know it's £500, but why not show the mileage? Surely it must waste the seller's time having people phone up to ask? Just screams dodgy dealer to me. Winds me up.

ETA - you could probably get a much better one for not a lot more that is not being sold by a numpty.
