For some reason, I find the idea of petite south-east Asian women riding enormous dualsport mototcycles, like BMW R1200GSs, strangely appealing.

There aren't that many that do, but they are out there.

Anyway, many GS's have a fat arse because the owners fit aftermarket panniers. Non OEM panniers take the easy route and sit on the outside of the exhaust pipes, which wastes a lot of space compared to integrated panniers which fit around the exhausts. For this reason a GS with aftermarket aluminium panniers is almost as wide as a Fiat 500 and a lot wider than my Pan European.

Perhaps - but the fat arsed panniers I was looking at were on the BMW stand at Motorcycle Live...
The exhaust cans are simply in the wrong place and there are twice the number required.

Nah - my maxi scooter is only about as wide as a regular bike. GS's are massively wide with the luggage on. I wondered why and had a good look at the last motorbike show, BMW for some reason decided to put big fat twin exhausts on every GS (even when they didn't actually need two) and then cut out massive chunks of pannier so they could make the panniers as small as possible while still making a bike as wide as an old mini.

KTM have got the right idea with their base-of-frame exhaust on the 390, you could fit awesome panniers on that and still have a very narrow bike.
All big GS have a single exhaust... And believe it or not the metal luggage is only a couple inches wider than the bars. However the bars are the same height as a transit van mirrors... Don't ask me how I know wink

Some of ones I looked at had a single tube running back to a muffler, but then on the other side another muffler joined up to the first with some pipes.
The bikes are nearly a metre wide as stock too.

I wish they'd go back to the R75 style for a bit - those look amazing and would make good tourers I reckon..

rsv gone!

For bikes that can't/won't filter!?
Yeah why not, it's only fair.

As soon as they charge for 1 bike ... they will charge for all ... more slippy that slope than a chinese hooker in a tub of KY jelly

There is nothing fair about being charged extra to drive around on one particular bit of public road than another.

Exactly. We've already paid three or four times for that bit of road, feck off charging us again! It's as stupid as charging us to park on the road we've paid for many times over - pure theft.

Now you're just showing your ignorance. The only GS that has an exhaust system like that is the tiddly G650GS.

I was looking mainly at the 800 and 650 sizes on the BMW stand.
Why do they have two pipes? That seems insane for a GS.

I believe the first "dummy" can is the catalytic converter, feeding with a cross pipe to the real can.

But surely if a 1200 can manage with one can - using two for a smaller bike is crazy?
I'm sure these things weigh something too...

I didn't design the damn thing, so I have no idea what they were thinking. Perhaps someone liked the symmetry?
Anyway, it's still just the one can, just a weird arrangement.
