I bought J111 YJA for my wife, for our 12th wedding anniversary. 11 years later, I've just paid to transfer it from a J reg Cavalier to an R reg Mx5.

Her name Jilly (JA is the first 2 letters of our surname - I wish I'd gone for E J as her middle name begins with E)

She says it make her smile every time she sees it.

Just bought a 51 reg mini for her daily driver. Looks as good as any 06 plate, so I wanted to transfer her reg to that, but she wants it on the MX5.

I note that for £399 I could buy Y111JEJ but I've got better things to spunk money on these days.

Have a V12 XJS with 5 speed manual gearbox fitted (stick change) etc etc, I bought XJS 1S from DVLA and fitted it, quite a cheap buy considering the restoration costs.laugh

Love mine - suits the car to a tee, has become its nickname with everyone that knows it, always gets positive comments (and never a negative one, till now?!) Lots to love and little to hate, surely? smile

I personally like private plates: they give you food for thought: how much did it cost? Let's see who's driving the car? (Old man? Rich WAG?), does it detract from the "air" of the vehicle? How much effort did this guy go to in order to get this plate? Etc etc

The best i've ever seen is ON D4 RUN on an M3 convertible. Looked absolutely brilliant!

I would have thought that someone with access to such a vast array of cars would have something more exciting and of value to talk about than random combinations of letters and numbers.

If you like it, buy it. If you don't, well don't. As for making an assessment of someone because of the plate they hold - well, the world seeminly has another satellite of stupid added to the vast number already orbiting planet earth.

So many responders on what is nothing more than pretentious, shallow, vapid, "look at me" culture.

What does it say that people have such strong opinions on the "matter". Quite bluntly, who gives a crap? If you think it says something "about" the plate owner, chances are, it probably says more about YOU. That you yourself might be pretentious, ....

Do yourselves a favour; spend your brains spare cycles on more important things.

For me, it is entirely about cleaning up the look of a car.

Ever since 2001, with the 7 digit plates, car rear ends and front ends looks messy.

a clean 3 4 or 5 digit plate makes such a big difference

Hi Chris,

Read your article and agreed with some but not all of it. I own several personal registration plates, none of which are car or name related. All have 2 or 3 digits with the letters POO before or after them. I chose these because they make me laugh and they make other people laugh who are not interested in cars at all and I often see all sorts of people of all ages, pointing and commenting on them. Which is a good thing.

Contrary to your comments I have had several high end cars vandalised for no apparent reason other than jealousy. All of which carried no personal registration plate and all in different parts of the country than my home town.

Cheers and keep writing good stuff.

99% of car purchases are based on that let alone aftermarket accessories like wheels !

Why does anyone buy a new car ?

Why do we (the UK) spend so much on bodywork repairs and keeping our cars looking nice ?

Why do we specify metallic paintwork, cars that can exceed the limit by such huge amounts ?

etc

Then clothing, watches...

Do you live in a cave wearing animal skins ?
