The Running Thread

Am looking for a little advice I've been running for the last 5 years with varying success! However the last 6 months fitness wise I seem to have really found my rhythm. Lung capacity wise I feel great but my knees especially are a problem while running, 8 miles today, by 3 miles they are aching and feel stiff they are fine later though. I do mainly road running and wear New Balance trainers which are only 4 months old. Any advice?
Guns, I'd get off road if your knees are causing you trouble.
I thought this might be of interest to some people: http://www.sportsscientists.com/2013/05/a-minimali... (It's about minimalist/barefoot shoes)

The Mrs and I decided to try a different Parkrun (Walsall) today as part of a reccy for her Race For Life tomorrow. Definitely not a PB course due to the 3 lap configuration with steep incline and descent at opposite ends.
Friendly lot, though. It's always interesting to see how other Parkruns do it; a natural extension of the organising team's personalities I guess.
Didn't PB due to some cack-footed pacing in the first lap but I'm happy to have returned to a fairly consistent 5k pace that I had before finishing the London Marathon.

Change your strike so that you land on your forefoot, takes a while to get used to it but it takes the pressure off the knees. I had painful 'runners knee', changed over and knees never hurt since. Parkrun this morning for me in 17:46, not my best time but not far off. 2nd out of 400+ isn't a bad feeling either. I was worried that my last few months of fell racing might have taken some speed away from me but doesn't seem like it has, My average heart rate was a fair bit higher than usual though

I'm doing the Bognor Regis 10k tomorrow. Not my first 10k run but the first since I suffered a minor stroke at the end of March. I entered just after New Year with the intention of going sub 45 minutes. All things considered, I'll be pleased to finish tomorrow, somewhere behind the inevitable posse of overweight 50/60-somethings at the back

Handicap parkrun! Bloody buses! 27.xx But the weather was good for it and it was nice that everyone finishing after me was someone I had passed along the way.
I quite enjoy starting right from the back and working through the field, you get to see people you don't normally see and always have a target ahead of you to overtake until you get close to the people doing your speed.Starting late on our course can be a problem as lap 1 is out and back so you can meet everyone head on if your bus is 5 minutes late!
I am genuinely cursed when it comes to recent races; had to dip out of a few last year when my immune system shut down, now fine but managed to stab a two inch nail through the sole of my flip flop deep into my heel last night; I felt it hit bone! Still running today (only a fun run) but it won't help. Also just had my hip do some weird spasm thing; arrggghhhhh!
Fairly pleasant 5.5 miles for me from Temple Meads station to work in North Bristol this morning. Only downside is that it's uphill most of the way with any downhills just meaning I have to regain that height again
Got the Trowbridge 5k on Sunday. Not done it before so I've no idea how fast the course is but it'll be interesting to see how close I can get to 16:00.

Well done!
Cheers! Might stick the route up later; 260ft of climbing so not exactly a fell route but still a bit hilly. My legs are moaning today! Overall average 5m56s/mile, at some stage it said 3m55; must have put a little sprint in.Gives confidence of an "official" sub 40min 10k. These rest days and cliff runs are paying off! I'm still not a road runner though; two people said I look like a fell runner; not sure what they look like but I took that as being okay.
Comedy wind out of sails moment afterwards; two teens who ran were asking who won; another kid said "some old, bald guy." My victory glow dipped rather a lot after that!!!
