I've been wanting to buy one of these for ages and have decided I will just bloody buy one. Especially as it now supports USB 3.0

It's an external HDD caddy. So far, so ordinary. But its USP is that you can store all your ISOs on it, select the one to mount via the little LCD and buttons, and then whatever you plug it into will think it is an external CD/DVD drive with the ISO mounted as a loaded disc.

The solution to the problem nobody ever had!
I can't conceive of a time I would ever need to use that to boot into Ubuntu, or a Windows flavour of OS etc... so why do I want one so much?

Are you saying that nobody in the history of computing has ever had to burn an ISO to physical media in order to install an OS? If it's a solution to a problem that nobody ever had then they wouldn't have made it.

Ok, granted, it's a niche product and not even geeks like me would use it that often (how often does one reinstall OSes) but I wouldn't say it was useless.

Very tempted by The Zippo Stainless Steel Wallet at the minute...

It's only $50, that's £35-40 or so in real money? And it's stainless steel! And made by Zippo!!

ETA: May have to stay a temptation - the US site doesn't ship internationally and the UK site doesn't list it frown fail!

You know you've been able to boot from USB drives for a while now? Is navigating that little LCD to trawl through 1Tb of ISO's any quicker than just copying it to a USB stick?

Surely the point of 'frivolous' is not "need" but "want"

Oh, for sure. Only it's a bit of a palaver as you need to convert the ISO into a bootable USB image. You don't just copy it and go.

But, anyway, this is getting a little off-topic. I wanted it, I don't really need it, but I bought it anyway. So thread topic fulfilled. biggrin

Just ordered a PD32 Ultimate Edition....

Something about torches just brings out the kid in me. 740 lumens in a torch this size is just silly!

Anyway, I've already bought it. Just need to decide on a drive to put in it. 1TB seems excessive so I'll probably go for that. biggrin

Just buy a PS3 it's the PH solution then buy a giant plasma screen to go with it.
Just to be safe really; the Xbox may pop so it would be nice to have a PS stashed away, just in case. wink
Plasma WILL be getting bought when the new apartment is finalised in the next week or so. PS4 will be getting preordered when i can be sure xbox can't offer me something better ^_^
