One from the St. Peter's brewery in Suffolk..............
The Saints Whisky beer
linky
made with malted barley dried over a peat fire, with a dash of St. Georges English whisky added - a very acquired taste, and probably best for those who like the smokey, peaty single malts. Took me till the end of the second bottle (consumed on seperate days) to start really enjoying it

Another one I had in Estonia, I think Tesco sell itFound Brooklyn Lager and Anchor Steam in Majestic yesterday...very dear though.
As an ex-Masshole my main squeeze is Sam Adams Boston lager, which they haven't had since before Xmas, but when I asked what the score was I was informed someone has started brewing it on this side of the pond - a quick look online suggests we may have draft by April
Brewdog make a 9% IPA for Tesco Finest. A bit of an acquired taste, but I like. I wasn't a fan of the Punk.

When did you have it?Recent bottles are much closer to the draught for quality (though not quite there).
I'd like to get to one of their pub/restau things
had a shot of brewdog tactical nuclear penguin last night. Now there's an obsure beer. Very treacly and sweet, more like sherry or port.
32% and strongest beer in the world in 2010... surpassed since then by another company, and then Brewdog trumped it again with "end of history" which is 60% or something ridiculous

I don't think buying it in the High St supermarket counts as 'obscure', although these supermarkets have been doing a great job of getting in more than the typical lager lately and getting more of my business for it too!
Back onto truly obscure, I picked up these two in Ca earlier this year. Although I'm a bit of an afficionado of good beer, I must confess I did buy these just for the labels alone
! I think they'd do alright in the OP's competition.

reminds me of a beer i bought a few years back whose name escapes me. that was a vintage bottling and tasted quite unlike anything i've ever had. very robust and unique tasting but pleasant with it, like an uber chimay. anyone know where to buy the harviestoun in the uk?

I've tried the 18yo before as they sell it at one supermarket in Frankfurt. Hellishly expensive but very nice.been looking at this with interest:

Oh God, the thought never occurred to me till you mentioned it, but you're not wrong. What have you done?!!!!
I'll try to forget that whilst I'm stocking up on my favourite bottle, their Belgian IPA

I don't pretend to be an expert, but I've tried all of these beers and they are very tasty, either with food or without.
Daleside brewery; Blonde and Old leg over.
Coniston brewery; Bluebird or Bluebird XB or their lager.
Black Sheep; Black Sheep or Golden Sheep (could be Golden Fleece).
Theakstons; Masham (can be difficult to get, but worth it!).
Titanic brewery; Iceberg.
Also agree with a previous poster, Moosehead (Canadian lager) is very good.
Whatever you decide on, enjoy!
