Dead Island Riptide
Discussion
What did you think was strange about the ending?
I think it's just indicative of the narrative clumsiness of Riptide. I think it's meant to suggest that the plague is coming to a new island, to begin a new outbreak. Though whether the cabin holds the infected survivors, or stowaway zombies from Palanai isn't shown. Whatever the case, I think it's disposing of the five main characters in the game. I also thought the twist with Harlow going rouge was s
t, and the boss fight against her was hopeless handled.
Having just finished the game this evening, I thought I would summarise a few of my thoughts on it:
1) The story blows. It is essentially 'you survived the first outbreak, but actually, things went wrong as you were escaping and now you have to go through the same sort of experience all over again'. It's like something from a bad film. The characters are cardboard cutouts, whole aspects of the story are frankly, never explained (Serpo - who does he work for? What does he want? etc etc).
2) The voice acting is abysmal. The Angela Guerra recordings are particularly awful.
3) The locations in the first game were better (at least the resort and the town). I found the jungle in Riptide to be pretty naff. Henderson was okay, but it had some irritating choke points in it.
4) Ammo was never plentiful, damn it.
5) The new super zombie designs are a bit naff. The screamer in particular is a pain in the arse.
6) I got every collectible, but the achievement glitched and stopped the counter at 60/61. Nice.
It feels like Dead Island of old, but with half the budget and imagination of the first game. There is very little new here, just a rehash of old ideas and a couple of half-baked add ons. I enjoyed hacking through it for over 20 hours but it is instantly forgettable gaming.

This game is total crap, just like the first one. The great USP of the game is the analogue fighting, and when you are smashing limbs in a violent ballet, it's great gun. But the game quickly becomes so fixated on throwing shedloads of enemies at you, rendering the analogue combat useless, as you simply cannot get enough damage ouput with the sticks compared to mashing the right trigger, and it immediately becomes dull as dishwater once the game takes this step.
