The 156 is a perfect saloon car in my eyes, especially in bog standard unfacelifted trim. No need for big wheels, side skirts or spoilers, just right! The 159 doesn't flow from front to rear in my opinion, it loses it where the rear side window meets the the boot line. E46 3 Series is a neat car but fussily detailed and the E30 looks like I'd designed it when I was 8!

Whilst (as the saying goes) beauty is in the eye of the beholder, there are some cars that dont immediately strike a person as being good looking / well designed aesthetically, until one takes the time to have a good long look from all angles.
IMHO One of the best looking, best proportioned cars that Ford have EVER produced is the Mk 3 Mondeo , it seems to look good from all angles, which is not something which can be said of all cars.
Even Clarkson who does not seem to have much time for any car under £60.000 remarked at just how good looking this particular version of the Mondeo was. The design of the latest Mondeo seems to be quite clumsy in comparison
I used to think the same but now it just looks old and as I own a Mk 4, that has grown on me quite a bit.IMHO One of the best looking, best proportioned cars that Ford have EVER produced is the Mk 3 Mondeo , it seems to look good from all angles, which is not something which can be said of all cars.

Of older stock, I would nominate the Lancia Beta
The Mk II Escort was also a great design:

also a coupe/ hatchback depending on the way the boot opens
I disagree. It has a separate boot as many cars of the early 70s did. They are referred to as sedans in the US and a coupe is a 2 door, not a 4 door. also a coupe/ hatchback depending on the way the boot opens
It might be a "fastback" but we're splitting hairs here, it's just the way the "sedan" has evolved following the advent of FWD and the absorption of the boot into the body space.
Had the question been "best 3 box saloon", I'd be right there with you.
