RE: Gran Turismo: 15 years of geekery

To people saying forza is arcadey. Try it with a wheel. Its miles better than GT. Its just Forza is designed to be accessible to everyone. Turn off all the assists and put it to sim steering and even with a controller imo its more realistic to GT. In GT if your using bumper view its near impossible to tell the difference between cars other than is it RWD, 4WD or FWD. In Forza you can feel the difference between each car, and with a steering wheel its actually very good! And incredibly immersive. For me GT is an arcade game, disguised badly as a simulator. Forza is more of a simulator, but with the option of playing it in a more arcade style.
When you look at the physics side of things, I don't think GT even has tyre deformation physics.

For a mainstream game GT5 does a great job. If you really want to learn about track racing, PC simulators are much more advanced. You can really learn about car setup and behaviour. I prefer to drive NetKar pro over GT5, despite being over 6 years old.
The soon to be released title from the same developers as NetKar has a tech demo available that is the best simulator driving experience I have used: http://www.assettocorsa.net/en/
Simulators clearly translate to the real world as demonstrated by all of the F1 teams.

Will be incredible once they've finished.http://www.assettocorsa.net/ferrari-f40-official-l...
If you really truly care about the sounds of the game as your number 1 priority, GT isn't for you.
GT5 with a decent wheel and set-up is just brilliant with online racing.
I mean if you do it properly in a lobby with other people that don't just want to banger race 1000bhp Saxos.
Turn all of the driver aids off, tyre degradation up, damage on etc. Elise and Evora feel very close to real life.
The problem with GT5 was, the delays and more delays meant that when the game was released, the graphics and sounds were already 2 years out of date.
I personally can't wait for GT6 - nothing beats Gran Turismo for proper racing, tyre strategies etc.

I thought the graphics and handling model of GT5 were excellent, if you use a decent steering wheel (Logitech Driving Force GT) and switch the driver aids off.
However, the sounds are terrible. What is worse is that the sounds are a lot better if you choose an outside view of the car, and you are positioned behind the car, but I do not want to play the game like that, it isn't an arcade game. To be honest, I am surprised you can even select an outside view on what is termed a "driving simulator".
If Polyphony Digital are reading this, please make the "outside sound" available while using an inside or bumper cam view. That way, the sound issue will be much improved.
On the subject of the XBox and Forza, I decided to buy the latest Forza and got my Microsoft steering wheel back from my friend, who had borrowed it long-term.
I found the steering to feel rather dull and not realistic at all. I had hopes that it would handle well, but in my short experience with it, it didn't, so back to GT5 for me.
Is that the fault of the Microsoft steering wheel? It is a shame you cannot use steering wheels across platforms, as needing multiple steering wheels seems excessive and not cost effective.

If you use something like the Fanatec wheel systems it changes Forza from a mediocre feel to something much, much better.
Gran Turismo doesn't tend to have very good engine sounds, because they have so many cars. If you listen to this clip of the GT Corvette from iRacing, you'll agree it's bloody accurate.

But they've had years to develop this engine sound and it's constantly evolving.
GT can definitely help teach people the basics. I would argue it's a very cost effective way of gaining experience, before hitting the track.
