I don't get as offended as Chris by them, but they seem a bit pointless to me.

I once bought a car (when the year prefix was a letter at the start) and was offered a 'personalised plate' for £250.

The dealer said I could have the current year, any two digits and and any three letters.

As my (then very young) daughter's name begins with the year letter and the first two letters of our surname aren't a million miles away from digits, I asked for a combination only to be told "Oh, sorry, you can't have that one". It wasn't taken, but the DVLA had 'reserved' it.

Clearly they thought there was a bigger mug than me out there who'd pay more than £250...

I wouldn't pay more than a very notional amount for a personal plate and then it'd have to be something very personal to me, but I don't really see any harm in them, although I do have a smile when I see an M3 XXX plate on a 32OD...

Why does it have to get so serious PH'ers?
No matter what people either side of the argument think, it is a good article that the writer admitted from the off a lot of people disagree with. I think it is interesting because it is always interesting for me to read why people like or dislike anything to with cars and their styling.
I think that people who like private plates may just have to accept that many people will think they are naff, and just because they do doesn't mean that they are wrong to think so.
The article is an open invitation for some friendly, light hearted debate to maybe suggest to Ducks why he might be wrong.

The best argument I have read on why it might be that I don't like private plates, is that they virtually always look 'after market', of which I have no problem with at all and I have cars with after market accessoriies, but I am the first to admit they are absolutely something most people probably don't like.

A silly reason I like standard date related plates, is that they kinda remind me of the name the car is given at birth, and I just like that.

I wouldn't buy a personalised plate, they cost money and I pay next to no attention to them anyway. If I could figure out the most difficult legal plate to read and remember then I would probably pay for that.

See if you can find an Aston Martin without a personalised plate.

I would love to have a personal plate with a single number and my initials...i think they look really good.

As it is i've managed to get something personalised but not as expensive as I still like it.

All the people on here moaning about social status would be the first ones to show off their tag watches instead of the old school casio that I wear with pride!!!!

Wow 34 pages now.....! I my be bias but I just can't see what all the fuss is about and why some of you get so wound up by some one else having a number plate on their car......? It's all just a bit of harmless fun with the potential of a long term investment better than any banks........!rolleyes

nono

No one's getting wound up.

It's those that would never buy a personalised plates passing judgment on the superficiality of those with one.

Seriously, you couldn't make it up.

Who the hell judges, importance, wealth, car or social status?
Lots of people every day I'm afraid.
Yup - just look around you. Creating an impression of wealth and social status and having the right lifestyle accessories to enhance and reinforce that impression is the main obsession with far too many people. Much better in my view to be content and secure with what you already have and what you are than to half kill yourself with worry about other people defining you by what you own.

The best things in life aren't things at all... wink

Exactly.

Everyone judging wealth and social status means that actually no one is judging it. You could just get in the selfish frame of mind and say 'I am very happy with my job, car, house, location, amount of land, tweed, shotguns and Labradors I own therefore I am automatically better than anyone who tries to say otherwise and equal to those who don't'.

And private plates are excellent unless done with a weird font or trying to spell a word and failing.

Lots of opinions aired, and there can only three trains of thought.

1. Agree with CH.
2. Disagree with CH.
3. Sit on the fence.

I am in camp 3 as most plates look tacky, but every now and then I see one which makes me smile!

What's the next rant Harris? Corsa's with 4 exhaust pipes?

The irony is thick on this thread.

The high conviction, aggressive ones with the most forceful opinions are the ones without private plates.

The people with the plates seem pretty sanguine and laid back about it.

So the anti-private plate people are aggressive , not a little rude and perhaps even obnoxious and argumentative.

The people with the plates seem pretty laconic.

Based on the evidence of this thread, it is the vitriolic chippy ones without the live-and-let-live attitude that most people would rather ignore.

Intriguing, indeed.
What a summary, with 20+ pages of evidence to back it up.

A Tag is about on par with most dreadful "cherished" plates.

My 2p - I think I dislike them. Has anyone ever seen a resale silver Honda S2000 that doesn't have a private plate starting in S2? How to take a car where they all look the same and just reinforce the point...

I dislike taking normal numberplates and trying to make them into something "funny" by dicking around with the fonts, screws and spacing. Like the previous owner with my car - I dislike even more the fact that those particularly illegally spaced places with the illegal font were actually glued onto the car instead of screwed on, but never mind (even more ironic given the occupation of said person). Maybe I'm hating the concept for purely personal reasons. :P

Agree with Harris, but with one exception - Aston's plate for its V12 press cars:
