having just ordered a B model to run as a media server, and looking at the Pi website.

I can see that there is Raspbmc, which it like xbmc, but for the PI, that i know, but dont know about anything linux.

whats the best operating system to put on it? ive only ever 'seen' linux running once. and that was like a coloured dos prompt, placing all the text (for example this website) where the text is and in different colours, but no lines or pictures or anything..... this was a few years ago now.

can you run the PI off the USB port on my tv? so when the TV goes on so does the PI?

I think i saw a pic of a OS on a PI and there was the Rasb PI logo as the background and a few menus but cannot remember if the menu bar was at the top or the bottom (kinda like windows bar or options bar in OSX)

how easy is it to set up the operating system on it as well. Im guessing you set the OS up on the SD card in a computer, then just stick it in the PI and away you go.

You don't need an "os" if you are only wanting a media center. Raspbmc is a watered down version of linux made to skip all the usual stuff and go straight into xmbc. I actually prefer openelec out of the two of these, seemed a lot more stable to me. I leave my pi's on 24/7 and just flick to the correct hdmi channel on the tellys to view.

You will need to do some command line stuff though if you want to add stuff to xbmc. It's pretty straight forward though.

He didn't mean that literally, its still running linux it just boots straight to xbmc with no GUI as such.

I believe xbmc has the facility to share any connected drives a network drive so you can then mount the attached disc on your PC to get stuff on it.

You can also use a program called putty to connect to the pi from your PC and use the command line to do stuff and install other programs.

I run raspbmc, I know nothing about linux. It took me about an hour to get it up and running. You just download the installer from the website and run it on a PC to create an image on an SD card. Wack the SD into the PI and off you go.

Almost everything can be done via the menu system. The only stuff I have used putty for is to set up a shared db system (I have several xbmc instances). Adding content, installing plug ins, configuring the skin/interface all via the UI.

Any time you do need to use linux command line, someone will have written a step by step guide.

Mine runs 24x7 it's so low power it's not worth worrying about. Also, your telly probably won't provide enough power via USB. The Pi is a bit sensitive about what it needs.

I use a powered USB hub to run the Pi along with WiFi dongle and remote keyboard dongle. It connects to a shared network hard drive via SMB and works brilliantly with Raspbmc.

I would say it takes a couple of hours to get it all up and running.

do you think that will work with the PI? im looking to get something like that keyboard and integrated mouse so i don't need a usb hub to control it with a keyboard and seperate mouse with my external HDD?

I bought this for an earlier HTPC project, but thought I'd try it with the pi.

Works fine, and the built in media buttons (volume, play/pause) all seem to work without any fiddling.

If I was to do it again, I'd probably look at something smaller, as having this enormous thing in the living room is a bit ungainly.

Something like this perhaps (but would need to check it works with the pi)

Although if you're just running raspbmc on it, I can recommend the xbmc remote for iOS. Tried it for the first time last night and seems really good.

I think there are add-ons/plugins within XBMC for Transmission/uTorrent, so you should be able to d/l straight to the Pi if you so wish.

I've got one of these on my (non-Pi) Nettop PC running openelec...

Worked straight out of the box, so no reason it shouldn't work with the Pi.

so, Im posting this from my Raspberry Pi...

just trying to figure out how to install RaspBMC but im getting stumpted

i opened the shell prompt to type in what the raspbmc.com says to type to get the installer, but dont really know why it is saying that file cannot be found.. so i downloaded a network installer file, and its a .img, which i dont know what to use to open it with...

and i set the start up thing to open to desktop as default, and dont know how to set it to run the setup thingy, so you have options before you get to desktop like overclocking and other stuff.

but that can wait, just need to get raspbmc installed first and then I can figure out how to do the rest...

anyone?

Why are you trying to run the installer from the pi - are you trying to do a non-standard installation?

Look here: http://www.raspbmc.com/wiki/user/windows-installat...

Download the windows installer and use it to set up your SD card, then put it in the pi and turn it on. That's pretty much all you have to do. It will boot and download the required files automatically. Once done, it will reboot straight into XBMC. You don't have to have any OS installed on the SD card as the installer will set it all up.

If you are going to be using wifi, then click on configure network manually in the installer and set your SSID and wifi key.

so I have seen an add on for RaspBMC for UTorrent, but cannot figure out a way to get it to load...

is there an actual way to download things with raspbmc? or is it just a stand alone media centre?

ETA: and another thing, every skin I use, its slightly too big for the TV, as in, the output from the rpi is a couple of percent larger than the screen size. so the edges of the time and the menu on the left it cut off slightly.... actually the menu that pops out on the left is about half missing, as the other half is off the screen.

any way to get round that? i have tryed different aspect ratios and other things, but cannot find a way to get round it.....

There's a calibration thingy in the settings menu where you resize the output to fit the screen, rather than try to resize your screen to fit the output. If you see what I mean.

Involves moving a corner with the arrow keys till it fits.

Download the addon you want via a PC, it will normally be a zip file.
Drop that zip file into a location that your pi can see
Go into the pi menus and find add-ons then install from a zip.
Navigate to the zip location
Install

It will probably be found in program/add ons once installed.

Other recommended plug-ins are the usual Iplayer/Itv/C4 services. CatchupTV is brilliant if you don't have an ariel feed into that location. And also consider Navi-x and IceFilms.

So playing with raspbmc and the ipad over the last couple of nights, and been quite pleased with the results.

Can stream youtube direct from the app to the pi, can control xbmc nicely.

It won't stream iTunes purchases to the pi. Is this a copyright issue, or a lack of codecs?

Also, thought I'd give Sky Go a try. The sound plays through the pi but no video. Again, copyright, codec or just not meant to be?

Copy protection I believe. iTunes music plays fine, but then it's not copy protected. YouTube and iPlayer both work well, but then there are native XBMC plugins for both.
