As opposed to sad tts with nothing better to do than spout vitriol on internet forums?
I totally agree "TRO 11" comes to mind.....! No worth while contribution to the thread at all.....!
Troll look up the definition

Why not consider they could be viewed as spouting vitriol on the front and rear of a vehicle.

Do personalised plates add much to our society?
They define, divide, keep some in their place, divisive, elitist, ridiculous, obnoxious, crass, vulgar, idiotic and irrelevant.

You only need look on here for proof.

Edit to add more worthless contribution...

Why would the DVLA restrict combinations and continue with ridiculous date links to the benefit of the motor trade to over inflated prices and over inflated perceived value.

If it was a free for all "ie any possible combination" maybe they'd be a okish with a contribution to good causes / charity. But even then .. they'd still stand for shouting out I'VE DONATED ... LOOK at ME ...

Never understood why in the UK personal plates go for so much money that there are actually auctions selling them, yet they have to use numbers in place of letters. Seems like a waste of money, to me.

In the U.S., you pay a small, set amount of money and can actually write what you want! Extremely popular over here, some of my favorites that come to mind are "OUR HOE" on a Chevy Tahoe and "DRTY VAG" on a VW Jetta. The state later revoked the VW owner's plate, so he got a new one that reads "CLN VAG". hehe

I think in the US it is more simply a bit of fun, they are, I beleive generally a set price, they dont tend to be a display of wealth like in the UK so they dont get the envy aspect, I am thinking that plates are issued on a state by state basis so there are more opportunities for more variety, ok the US is much bigger than the UK but the individual states themselves are generally, even if bigger in land mass less populous.

I think some of the desperate attempts with regards to fonts, screws and spacing are due to the fact there are sixty million people drawing from a pool of possible permutations, all new plates are a fixed format and a lot of old registrations have been retired when the car they were on originally was scrapped, the DVLA strictly controls what is released so you cant just say I want "CLN VAG" and get it if nobody else has got it (and it isnt offensive), you would have to find something that substitutes numbers for letters or whatever.

I dont get wound up by private plates, I thinkt he motoring landscape would be a lot duller without them, just would prefer to see blatant misrepresentation taken more seriously.

I bought GET 51S for £230, had it 2 years and not put it on a car yet, It probably means nothing to anyone else but that's not why I bought it. when it does go on a car it will be on a classic car.

Crikey. Is this a childhood thing? Let me guess, as a child you asked for a private plate for Christmas to go on your Raleigh Chopper, but 'Santa' left you a copy of 'Das Kapital' instead because it was "more educational".

Chill your beans, fella - so much venom directed towards something of so little consequence. biggrin

I was pretty "meh" about personal plates, but that was before I read this thread and found out how excited other drivers get about them, might just get one now, heh!

There's a lot of folks about who claim not to care what other people think but are clearly very concerned about appearances. And I don't mean those trying to impress people with a plate so much, more those who are very keen to appear proper and seemly.

I'd always sworn I would never get a 'vanity' plate, but whilst perusing the dvla registrations site, how could I not resist getting MY51 GRF for my new purchase. I won't be able to move the plate on, as very few Griffs were made in 2001, so on the car it will stay! smile

Children think PP's are brilliant some never grow up others like being flash, oddly not a very British trait in the US understandably naf we're becoming more like Americans every day.

Surely there are more important things going on in the (motoring) world to worry about than people living & working in a democratic society that choose to run a car with a private plate???

Sure you have the right to an opinion, but come on, can you not conjure up more interesting copy about something else?!!

This topic is much more interesting that the Aventador Roadster or doing the Mille Miglia, the number of posts is quantifiable evidence of that. biggrin

It is to me actually, as I can't relate to either of those.

However, I can relate to the epidemic that is desperately spaced, st plates. wink

One personalised plate I do recall, from several years ago, is a Range Rover driven by a particularly well-upholstered blond with the plate which read 5EXY. biggrin

Unfortunately CH dumped all "vanity" plates in the same group - good, funny, bad and horribly butchered ste plates
