Regarding the OP's point about looking more healthy and natural, I can understand wanting that but maybe look at your lifestyle first.

I know for a fact I'd be absolutely 'slaughtered', and not only have I known them 20+ years since school, but I'd consider us in the main fairly broad minded.

This, and some of my mates are batting for any team that will let them.A little to cover up a banging spot at a wedding or a black eye for work, etc is fine. Dressing up for an event or show is fine. DOing it for TV/Stage is fine. DOing it to catch the 6:30 to Euston and then go to the office is just wrong for a bloke.
